Pet Water Safety
With the vacation-party week of the 4th coming up, summer is now in full swing. Swimming is fabulous fun for many of our pets and a great way for them to cool off while getting some exercise.
Water can be hazardous for pets, just as it is for children. Since our pets only communicate through body language, we must stay tuned to their well-being even on those busy days when we have lots going on to distract us. A pet in distress, whether frightened, sick or over-heated, may only send out relatively subtle signals, since to display weakness in the animal world can make them vulnerable to predators.

Window Hummingbird Feeder
We have a firespike bush outside our office window to attract hummingbirds, as I described in a prior post. For a hummer fan, there is nothing like seeing your favorite little birds up close. This Window Mount Hummingbird Feeder would do the trick as well.
The nectar is placed in a clear acrylic feeder bottle with an easy to clean wide-mouth design. It attaches easily to your window, or a wall or post, with quick release clips for easy filling. There are two feeding stations with perches. Bottle has 8 ounce capacity. Be sure to clean the feeder with soap and water prior to re-fill.
It is not necessary to purchase hummingbird nectar unless you so desire--you can make your own easily. Mix 1/4 c. sugar and 1 c. water in a cup or jar and add to the clean feeder as needed. It is unadvisable to dye the nectar red.

Hurricane and Natural Disaster Pet Care

** Lessons Learned. Our area was a bulls-eye for Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne (September 2004, 3 weeks apart!) as well as Wilma in late October 2005. It was an eye-opener, especially since many of us had weathered quite a few New England hurricanes already.
It was the norm to be without power for at least a week to 10 days, some more. An important lesson Floridians learned--you are ON YOUR OWN--water, food, health, entertainment--as far as your local and state authorities go, during and at least for the first few days after the storm. They experienced the disaster too. Neighbors and strangers can be amazingly helpful in a crisis; however, plan to be completely self-reliant.
Florida residents have learned most of what we are posting here through personal experiences. Following are some strategies that we know now, that we really didn't know then.

Flea Zapper Electronic Comb
In many locations fleas flourish year round. There are many topical solutions available to combat them, which are very effective but not particularly cheap. If you prefer not to go that route, or have a particularly stubborn case, you may want to add a Flea Zapper Electronic Comb to your arsenal.

Pet Jet Washer
Nifty idea here. Dog bath time, can be crazy. You hold them with one hand and somehow open a shampoo bottle with the other (of course you forgot to open it first) without dropping or spilling the bottle. Then all the shampoo goes on one spot and you try to spread it out before your doggie decides to shake. Unless your dog is the type who likes to stand still, it's all downhill from here!
The Pet Jet Washer may make bath time a little bit easier since it has a reservoir that holds 6 oz of shampoo. The Washer has three nozzle settings--rinse, wash, or jet spray--to control the water pressure. For instance use “rinse spray” for wetting and rinsing, “wash spray” to apply shampoo and “jet spray” for power washes.
To shampoo, all you do is press the button for soap, then squeeze the grip for water. It has a lock button for a constant water stream. The reservoir holds 6 oz of shampoo. The Washer has an 8 ft hose and connectors for indoor or outdoor baths. The indoor adaptor attaches to bathroom or kitchen faucets. The outdoor adaptor lets you to wash your pet at the garden hose. Sounds like a plan!

Pet Accidents--Gonzo™!
