Writing this post, there is a Golden Retriever sleeping under my desk. If I move to another room, shortly I will hear the padding of golden paws behind me as she follows me there. Does Your Pet Need a Job?

If you live with, or know of, a dog with "behavior problems", the real problem may be lack of sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. Most dogs were genetically bred to perform a specific job for their human companions, which, like many jobs in our 21st century, is gone and ain't coming back.

Who says? MSNBC, in City dogs get to know their inner herder--"It's almost as if the dog needs a job. And when they discover, 'This is what my job is supposed to be,' then everything falls into place." For many dogs, that job is herding:

The American Kennel Club says new herding clubs are popping up across the country, although it does not track exact numbers. Nearly 200 clubs held herding trials last year. More than 10,000 dogs competed, a roughly 10 percent increase over 2006.

Owners describe the practice as an antidote to tighter leash laws and disappearing dog-friendly spaces in U.S. cities. They talk of their dogs' first time in the arena with the pride and amazement usually reserved for describing a child's first day at kindergarten. Many also acknowledge that herding was a last resort.

Furbuster DeShedding Tool Fights Hairballs

If you have grown tired of stepping in slimy furball piles on your floor, one vet is suggesting eliminating the hairball formula food and brushing the fur away with the FURminator which we have written about before. From Doolittler's, Hairballs from hell:

Solution: Daily Furminator "brushing" sessions at least five minutes long. Daily Laxatone (a petroleum-based hairball product) in place of hairball formula food. A higher quality diet measured down to the last kibble for a gradual loss of weight (no more than 1-2 pounds per month). No more kitty milk (his former fave).

At a time when people are fretting about toxins in baby bottles and prescription drugs in the water supply, a new report shows that our pets are teeming with chemicals as well.

The analysis, released by the Washington-based Environmental Working Group, used blood and urine samples from 35 dogs and 37 cats collected at Hanover Animal Hospital in Mechanicsville, Va. The study found high levels of numerous chemicals in dogs and cats, including chemicals used in the making of furniture, fabrics and electronics. Mercury was also detected at high levels, likely from fish used in pet food.
