PetScoop -- Biotech Firm Says Dog Cloning to be Cheaper
Remember that South Florida couple who welcomed a $500,000 cloned puppy into their home earlier this week? Turns out that pup might have been a bit pricey, even in the cloning market.
The South Korean biotech firm who cloned the pup has unveiled a new cloning technology that could significantly reduce price tag of $100,000 or more. From MSNBC:
RNL Bio said it has developed a new method to clone dogs using stem cells derived from fat tissue that greatly increases the likelihood of success.
It added the new technology can also help in studying treatments of genetic disorders in canines that have similarities to human illnesses including diabetes.
"If we fully develop this technology, dog cloning will be much easier than now. We can reduce the cost for cloning," said Ra Jeongchan, the chief executive of Seoul-based RNL Bio.
Ra, which is applying for a patent, said two cloned beagle puppies were born in the past week using this method which could reduce the cost of cloning a pet dog to about $50,000 within three years.

Boca Raton Couple Paid $155,000 at Auction to Clone a Deceased Pet
We posted last June about the Best Friends Again cloning auction, a program sponsored by BioArts International. The winners, Nina and Edgar Otto, paid $155,000 for Lancelot Encore, a clone of the Otto's late dog, Lancelot. The Ottos have just welcomed their new puppy clone into their multi-pet household.
From the Miami Herald:
The 10-week-old golden Labrador retriever is a clone, created in South Korea by a California biotech firm from the DNA of the first Sir Lancelot, the beloved pet of Ed and Nina Otto of Boca Raton.
The original ''Lancy'' died, at age 11, in January 2008.
A celebrity from the moment he bounded off an American Airlines flight Monday night at Miami International Airport, Lancy redux ''very quickly integrated into the menagerie and held his own,'' said Lou Hawthorne, CEO of BioArts, the firm that auctioned off five dog-cloning procedures last July.
The Ottos spent $155,000 to win the second-round auction.
Cloning replicates an animal's genetics, barring DNA mutations, but can it replicate the spirit of the being you knew and loved?

Ms. Grandin bases many of her observations in "Animals Make Us Human" on the work of a Washington State University neuroscientist named Jaak Panksepp who identified a series of core "emotion systems" in animals: seeking, play, care and lust (on the positive side) and fear, panic and rage (on the negative).
"The rule is simple," Ms. Grandin writes. "Don't stimulate rage, fear and panic if you can help it, and do stimulate seeking and also play." Ms. Grandin employs Dr. Panksepp's terms throughout "Animals Make Us Human," but they are really only a framework for her more interesting riffing and observations.

is voluntarily recalling seven of its Grreat Choice® Dog Biscuit products that contain peanut paste made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste made at its Blakely, Georgia facility.
Although PetSmart.com is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to these products, it has removed these products from its store shelves and website and is conducting the recall as a precautionary measure.
The recalled products include only the following types of Grreat Choice Dog Biscuits sold between Aug. 21, 2008 and Jan. 19, 2009:

Let your dog check the weather. Dogs don't have the Weather Channel, so they don't know why they are being denied a long walk for the day. Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it is too cold or too stormy to go on a long walk. Instinctually, the dog will understand why it is coming back inside where it's safe. But be careful not to allow them to do this too often. They can learn to use this open door to manipulate and control you. Also, some dogs, if out in the cold for too long, will develop thicker fur and maintain their fat as a natural protection, so they may not feel the cold as intensely as we humans do. This can be an advantage if you want to continue to take your dog for walks in cold weather. However, please keep in mind that many short-haired breeds do not have this natural resistance to cold weather.

Cloned Pets -- Where Does Nature End and Nurturing Begin?
Mira and MissyToo, cloned from the DNA of a deceased dog belonging to Lou Hawthorne's mother, featured in Living Together: Beloved Pets Everlasting over at NYTImes.
The most difficult thing about the cloned puppies is not telling them apart, but explaining why they don't look exactly alike. This was the problem Lou Hawthorne faced on a recent afternoon hike with Mira and MissyToo, two dogs whose embryos were created from the preserved, recycled and repurposed nuclear DNA of the original Missy, a border collie-husky mix who died in 2002.
To be sure, they have a very strong resemblance to each other and to Missy. It's just that sometimes, as soon as people hear that the dogs are clones, the questions start coming...
