Just wanted to let you know of a good experience I had with Merrick Pet Food. I include this brand of cat food in the variety that I buy my cats. They have good products overall, good ingredients, quality, etc.
Well a few weeks ago I had the horrible experience of opening a rancid can. Definitely one of the worst smells I've ever encountered, and it sprayed on my hands when I opened it which left a great lingering stench. So I contacted the company and provided lot information of the can. They replied with the usual apologies and asked for my address so they could send a coupon. I was honestly expecting a coupon to get a free can of cat food.
Well, today I received a package from them with a bag of dry food and a coupon for a case of 24 cans of cat food, so about $45 worth of products. This was definitely above and beyond what I expected, they won me back. Good company and they'll keep getting my business.

Automated Pet Hair and Dirt Removal -- Neato Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The popular Roomba will soon have some competition. According to Priya Ganapati at Wired.com "despite a passionate community of users, Roomba has faced a few criticisms":
The gadget uses a randomized algorithm to clean a room, which has led to complaints that it doesn't always cover an area completely. Roomba has also suffered from a small bin that limits how much it can clean on a single battery charge. That also limits its ability to clean multiple rooms.
The new Neato Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is purportedly smarter than the Roomba. While the Roomba utilizes a zig zag pattern, the Neato cleans back-and-forth using mapping technology to determine the room's perimeter and locate walls and furniture up to 4 meters via a laser-guidance system, rather than through impact.
Dust-bin removal is out the back of the Roomba and from a relatively larger bin on the top of the Neato. Other Neato features are scheduling, detection of drop-offs and stairwells, and a low profile (less than four inches high) allowing it to clean under beds, sofas, and toe-kicks in the kitchen.
The Neato XV-11 all-floor vacuum system will be available for purchase in the U.S. this coming February 2010 priced at $399.

Looking for something good to read for yourself or another pet lover? One pet book on the Amazon bestseller list is All Creatures Great and Small
by James Herriot. We are not surprised. This book and the others in the series were fabulously popular 30 years ago and still hold up today.
If you haven't read these already, you have a treat ahead of you. As a young veterinarian fresh out of school, kindly Dr. Herriot, pseudonym for James Alfred Wight, joins Siegfried Farnon in his established country animal practice in rural England.
These Herriot books tell the absorbing, touching and sometimes humorous tale of the author's hands-on experience as a large animal vet on Yorkshire farms and as a small animal vet in town. You will enjoy his compassionate insights into human nature, as well as a look into his warm and wonderful personal life, with a vivid picture of pre- and post- WWII England.

PetScoop -- Cat Cams Reveal What Your Cats Really Do Home Alone
Most of us have felt twinges of guilt leaving our pets home alone. What do they do when we aren't there? Do they just sleep all the time? Do they have a boring life?
Nestle Purina PetCare's Friskies brand of cat food made it their business to find out. 50 house cats were equipped with collar cameras that snapped a photo at 15 minute intervals. Jill Villarreal, an animal behavior scientist, collected the data:
Based on the photos, about 22 percent of the cats' time was spent looking out of windows, 12 percent was used to interact with other family pets and 8 percent was spent climbing on chairs or kitty condos. Just 6 percent of their hours were spent sleeping.
The 777 photos studied by Villarreal showed the cats looking at a television, computer, DVDs or other media 6 percent of the time and hiding under tables 6 percent of the time.
Coming in at 5 percent was playing with toys; eating or looking at food finished at 4 percent.
Based on this data, cat owners get the best bang for their buck investing in Cat Furniture. And keep those curtains and blinds open, at least during the day!
