For the Sake of Our Pets, Lose the Fireworks

fireworkspets.jpg

Did you shoot off neighborhood fireworks last night to "celebrate" 2010? If so, this one's for you.

We believe in your right to be "you" as much as anybody -- vive la difference, life is a rich tapestry of colors, and variety is the spice of life. But...your right to be "you" also grants us the right to be "us". And we live with pets.

As pet owners we have to say: enough already, lose the fireworks, okay? After all, they are illegal, clearly dangerous and disturb the (midnight) peace. For those of us living in sub-tropical, drought-ridden tourist meccas, they present an unnecessary fire hazard as well.

Incessant loud booms, especially for hours on end, confuse and terrify pets, cause them emotional anguish, and worse, spook these sweet souls into running away and hurting themselves. Combustibles + parch-dry vegetation = fire engines screaming through the night.

That was our New Year's Eve 2009. How was yours?
