Happy Earth Day 2010 -- Pets Gone Green and Eco-Friendly Poop Disposal

Happy Earth Day! Now is the time to reduce the environmental impact of our pets and improve their quality of life at the same time.
For lots of great ideas, check out Pets Gone Green: Live a More Eco-Concious Life with Your Pets
by Eve Adamson. This book will have you "recycling dog toys, cleaning up messes in safe, inexpensive ways, and learning how to be an advocate for a better world."
Pet poop can be hazardous to both human and pet health, transmitting germs and diseases. The more pets there are and the closer we all live to each other, the more at risk we are. Below are some easy solutions:
Dogs. The standard plastic bags many pet owners use to clean up poop are not earth friendly. Biodegradable poop bags such as BioBag Dog Waste Compostable Bags
will break down easily and are environmentally friendly.
Another approach is to install a Doggie Dooley Septic-Tank-Style Pet-Waste Disposal System
in your back yard. This works like a miniature doggie septic tank, using natural bacteria and enzyme cultures to turn dog waste into a ground-absorbed liquid.
Or try DIY. Dig a hole in your back yard and insert a garbage can or bucket with holes in the bottom. Then dispose of the pet poop into the bucket. Flush with water mixed with an enzyme cleaner such as Waste Terminator
, which will help break down the pet waste.
Cats. Biodegradable litters are made from various plant sources, including pine wood pellets, or recycled newspaper, clumping sawdust, barley, and dried orange peel. Top-selling natural litters are Feline Pine Cat Litter
and World's Best Cat Litter
. Or give up litter all together with a Self-Washing Self-Flushing CatGenie
.
