Hummingbird Slow Motion Videos
We live in a sub-tropical climate that is (usually) quite warm and comfortable (except this winter). At least one pair of Ruby-Throats is back this year, buzzing around and feasting off the Firespike bushes and Bottlebrush tree. A Firespike right outside our office window affords a close-up of the birds feeding. One perches for minutes at a time on a tiny stem of the bush.
For those of you still in snow country, below are close-up videos of hummers feeding--the first out of someone's hand! The second two are set to music and quite beautiful.

PetScoop -- Canned Food May Benefit Your Pet
Which is better--canned or dry pet food? Some pets may flourish better on a canned "wet" diet, according to Dr. Katy J. Nelson, an emergency veterinarian in Alexandria, Va. In Dog Daily she says that at least five types of dogs particularly benefit from canned or "wet" food
:
1. Puppies -- Canned food is easy for them to digest and offers a concentrated source of protein.
2. Small breeds -- They too can have delicate digestive systems and high metabolism.
3. Dogs with food allergies -- Nelson often advises owners with food-allergic dogs to feed them a blend of wet and dry. This makes the food more palatable to the dog and minimizes problems from possible allergens.
4. Dogs with kidney and urinary tract conditions -- These dogs need good hydration, which they can get from the moisture of wet food.
5. Certain older dogs -- Senior dogs often suffer from health issues that are eased by wet foods. Dogs that have had teeth extracted, for example, might have difficulty chewing their kibble.

Pet Acoustics Relaxation App for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
Does your pet get nervous due to separation anxiety, thunderstorm fears, car travel, veterinary visits? Or maybe you have a new puppy or kitten who needs some comforting.
As we all know, music for humans can change the mood and feel of an environment, so you can put this to work for you.
Pet Acoustics music has been specifically designed for the hearing sensitivities of your pet, in frequency, volume and rhythm, to calm and soothe your pet anytime, anywhere. The app is available at Apple iTunes.com

For your home, the Pet Acoustics sound system, My Pet Speaker
, will transform your music library into pet-friendly tunes that soothe and relax dogs, cats, horses, as well as the people they love.
The Speaker limits the frequencies and plays a soft bass, so your pets will not be startled or disturbed by the jarring volumes and piercing sounds that instinctively put them on alert.

Dog and Cat Dental Tool -- Tooth Scaler

February is pet dental health month. Actively brushing your pet's teeth should keep your pet's teeth in good shape. As you have probably figured out for yourself, it's smart to start early in life so your dog or cat gets used to it.
Other tips for pet dental care are feeding dry food and providing crunchy treats and dental chews such as Greenies
.
We are admittedly, and probably not correctly, somewhat skeptical of the recent veterinary push towards professional dental work (anesthesia) to rid your pet's teeth of built-up tartar, as they reap a tidy sum for the procedure.
If you have a compliant pooch, a possible alternative is this Double End Pet Dental Tooth Scaler
as a remedial measure. Use on dog's or cat's teeth to scrape off tartar, plaque, and bacteria-harboring calculus yourself.
Of course if your pet has red, swollen or bleeding gums, obvious gum erosion or foul breath, consult your veterinarian.

. The combination of Swiffer Electrostatic Disposable Cloths
with a rechargeable upright vacuum gives the harried pet owner the enhanced ability to quickly and easily remove fine debris like dirt, dust, and pet hair, as well as larger objects like leaves and crumbs. Clean house in no time!

Care for Pets Left Behind by the Rapture -- Eternal Earth-Bound Pets

Do you believe your pet has a soul?
Anywhere from 20 million to 40 million people in the melting pot we affectionately call the US of A are devout believers in The Rapture. To refresh your memory, in the off chance you find yourself excluded from this group, Jesus will return to Earth in the Second Coming. The righteous, both dead (what have they been up to in the meantime?) and alive, will ascend to a better place, while the unsaved remain behind on Earth. Hence, the Rapture.
But what will become of all the pets doomed to remain here on Earth, since these 20 to 40 million believe animals do not have souls and hence cannot partake?
Business Week reports that a new service called Eternal Earth-Bound Pets (219 comments on the article at this writing), all confirmed atheists, will step in to provide for the animals left behind by the 'saved'. Required qualifications of the reps: "animal lovers, are moral / ethical with no criminal background, have the ability and desire to rescue your pet and the means to retrieve them and ensure their care for your pet's natural life."
The service is limited to dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and small caged mammals. For $110.00 they will guarantee that should the Rapture occur within ten (10) years of receipt of payment, one pet per residence will be saved. Each additional pet at your residence will be saved for an additional $15.00 fee.

Canine Genius "Mike" Connectable Treat Toy Puzzles

Named after Michelangelo, this Canine Genius Mike Connectable Treat Toy Puzzle
is designed to bring out the "genius" (i.e. natural instinct) in your pet and provide some food-based stimulation.
"Mike" will challenge your dog to employ his/her rusty hunting and foraging skills, working to remove the treats you put inside and thus slowing down the whole rather frenetic process of inhaling vittles.
Also a good game toy for fetch, tug-of-war, and water sports--it floats. For all size dogs.
9Lives Survey -- Most American Cat Owners Are Not Aware of Proper Feline Nutrition

Pet owners try to have their furball's best interests at heart and think they are providing them with nutritious foods. But are some of us unintentionally subjecting our cats to potential harm?
A nationwide survey commissioned by 9Lives Cat Food
of US cat parents found that:
- 94 percent of American cat owners are confident they feed their pets the most nutritious meals possible. However, nearly half (48 percent) admit they've fed their cat table scraps - which do not provide the essential nutrients cats need - on average seven times per month
- 75 percent believe that the more nutritious the cat food, the more expensive it is
- 70 percent believe that giving cats milk to drink is a healthy practice, a surprising statistic considering most adult cats are lactose intolerant
- 23 percent think a purely vegetarian diet is a wholesome choice, when in fact it can be harmful

Some of the signs are redness inside the ear, a black discharge and an odor. Molly Meow Cat Duvet

The folks that brought us the Molly Mutt Dog Duvet, featured here at SCP last June, have just launched the Molly Meow Cat Duvet
for our kitties. Use this new duvet to recover your old cat bed, or stuff a new one with blankets and clothes from around your house.

Very similar to the Molly Mutt duvets and stuff sacks, they're available in two patterns in either a round or square bed. To add cat appeal, they come with a matching "cat nip bag"--a small zippered bag that matches the pattern of the duvet. Just add your favorite catnip
into the zippered bag, and place the bag in the stuff sack along with the clothes, bedding and other textiles.

PetScoop: At Westminster Dog Show, Do Big Bucks and Influence Prevail?

Happy Valentine's Day! A reminder that the 134th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will be held this Monday and Tuesday, February 15-16, 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There's been lots of interest in the three new breeds. Breed judging highlight videos will be available throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday on the Westminster web site.
What does it take to be top dog? In this, as is too often the case in our American society, it's about money and politics, according to a New York Times article on the subject, Hype, Money and Cornstarch: What It Takes to Win at Westminster. Interesting read.
The bucks. They are the not-so-secret key to success at this and other top dog shows held every year. On Monday, when Madison Square Garden in Manhattan hosts the 2010 Westminster Dog Show, the most prestigious event on the thoroughbred canine calendar, money will quietly play a role in determining the winner, just as money quietly shaped the field of contenders -- and just as money shapes almost every nook and cranny of the dog show business.
The schedule is as follows:
- All Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding breeds and varieties will be judged on Monday, with Groups judged on Monday evening.
TV Coverage: 8-9 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network. 9-11 p.m. (ET) live on CNBC - All Sporting, Working, and Terrier breeds and varieties will be judged on Tuesday, with Groups judged on Tuesday evening. Best In Show will also be judged on Tuesday evening.
TV Coverage: 8-11 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network
- All Junior Showmanship preliminaries will be judged on Monday afternoon, with the finals to be held at 7:30PM on Tuesday evening.

Calorie Content on Low Calorie Pet Food Labels May Be Unreliable

Apparently nearly 50% of domesticated animals are overweight or obese. But how to cut down? Are you confused about the amount of calories in pet food, even the low-calorie pet food? If so you are not alone.
A study by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, recently published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, examined nearly 100 commercially available diets with weight management claims. From study co-author Dr. Lisa Freeman, Professor of Nutrition at the School:
There is so much information--and misinformation--about pet foods, it's understandable that people are confused about what to feed their dogs and cats. To counteract these myths, people are accustomed to turning to the labels on food--but, as this study shows, packaging might not always be a reliable source of information.
The results of the study were:
- Dry dog foods range in calorie density from 217 to 440 kilocalories per cup (kcal/cup). The recommended intake ranged from 0.73 to 1.47 times the dog's "resting energy requirement".
- The numbers for wet dog food (189-398 kcal/can) and cat food (235-480 kcal/cup) marketed for weight control were similar.
- The diets also varied markedly in price--from 4 cents to more than $1.10 per kilocalorie.

JetCare Anti-Bark Water Spray Collar

If you would like to improve your pet's behavior without using shock or citronella spray collars, this new (to the US and Canada) cold air spray anti-bark training collar should cause no pain or distress.
When your dog misbehaves, the cold air spray in the anti-bark spray collar is directed towards the neck, to surprise your dog. The goal is to interrupt the behavior, so you can then re-direct your dog's attention to another appropriate activity.
As recommended on the site WagandBark, optimally you can train your dog without fear and pain. Try to follow up with positive reinforcement and rewards such as playtime and/or small treats such as bits of kibble.

Super Cool Pet Book -- Amazon Hot New Release -- Making Rounds with Oscar the Cat

You may have heard the story of Oscar the cat, the somewhat aloof resident at a nursing home who only spent time with people who were close to death. This fascinating story is told by David Dosa in Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat
released today.
No one knows how he does it, but Oscar somehow perceives who is dying, and stays with the patient until the patient passes. He was known to sit outside a closed door until admitted, and would refuse to leave a dying patient's bed. The author, a doctor at the nursing home, was initially skeptical and actually was not even particularly fond of cats. Interesting read.
