You may remember Ted Kerasote, the author of the best-selling and most enjoyable book Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog. The long-awaited follow-up Pukka: The Pup After Merle is now scheduled for release. The narrative on the author's web-site describes it best:
In 2009 I met Pukka, the pup who won my heart after Merle. This is his story, told in his words and accompanied by about 200 photos that I and others took. Though it's uniquely Pukka's story, it also recounts how puppies grow and learn and become dogs.
Pukka: The Pup After Merle is told in Pukka's voice and is chock full of gorgeous photos of America's West. The book is scheduled for release this fall and is available now for pre-order.

One of the downsides to walkies is carrying the poo bag, for obvious reasons. Solution -- since most doggies just love their poo, put a PooBoss K9 Utility Vest on your dog to carry his/her own poo bag.
The vest also has a separate utility pocket for reward treats, wet wipes, your cell phone, keys--those extra items you juggle while still trying to control your dog.
This vest can be used with your dog's own collar or harness and has wide reflective strips to keep you both safe and visible. It comes with convenient Velcro closure, quick-release buckles and adjustable straps. Choose from four sizes, six colors and two different linings, lightweight and the heavier quilted.

We were recently sent a free copy of Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger which has received five star reviews. The book is written by Bo Hoefinger, a mixed-breed shelter dog who also writes Dogster.com's "For the Love of Dog" blog. The cover blurb describes it best:
Let's get this clear right away: I'm a dog. I'm 1'10" and weigh 63 lbs, and although I'm a mutt on the outside, I'm a purebred on the inside. My good nature comes from the Golden Retriever side of the family, while my stubbornness is clearly from my Chowchow bloodlines. I've got Rastafarian ears, a black tongue for licking, and paws that should be on a dog twice my size.
I type 60 words a minute.
My name is Bo, and this is my story.
From shelter dog reject to beloved pet and popular doggie blogger, Bo Hoefinger's life has been anything but ordinary. Join this incorrigible canine as he welcomes us into his life, complete with his wacky "parents," a constipated feline housemate, and chipmunk warfare.
And here's a short clip of Bo taking his canine good citizen test:
Bo's book is dedicated to "all the shelter workers, rescue groups and animal welfare proponents who make this world a better place, one animal at a time. You are unsung heroes and a true inspiration." Bo generously donates 10% of his proceeds to help homeless dogs as well as cats.
We are giving away one copy of Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger. To receive it, please email us: email@example.com -- first come, first serve!

The original FURminator deShedding Tool has spent over 1400 days in the top 100 bestsellers at Amazon. Once carrying a rather hefty price tag, it has been reduced 55% to $26.99. The Furminator Cat deShedding Tool comes in a close second at over 1000 days in the top 100, currently reduced 46% to $18.99. Both of these popular grooming tools are eligible for free super-saver shipping.
For those unfamiliar with the FURminator, it is a innovative grooming tool for long- and short-haired dogs and cats. Its 4-inch stainless-steel edge removes loose undercoat hair quickly and easily and decreases shedding up to 90 percent for about 4 to 6 weeks, leaving a shiny and healthy topcoat. The tool has a comfortable, ergonomic grip handle.
So if you have been holding off on the FURminator due to the price, now is the time to grab one relatively affordably. We love ours here at Super Cool Pets!

Does your pet get fur mats, but hates groomies? This affordable stainless steel Safari Mat Splitter has come to our rescue trying to keep our Golden Retriever wild women presentable. It slices right through the smaller clumps and with a quick flick even the larger mats are gone.
No sawing away near the skin with dull scissors while the dog squirms away. It has a rounded tip to prevent injury to you and your dog, plus you pull up vertically through the mat, away from the skin.
This tool is razor sharp -- the Safari Mat Splitter is not for use by children.

Many pets live in areas that experience strong summer storms along with the steamy summer weather. And next thing you know, your pet has slinked away to a dark closet, under the bed or table, panting heavily and trembling. Pet reactions range from mild to phobic and can definitely keep the household awake in the early morning hours.
Our hearts go out to our panicked pets -- what to do? There are many approaches to anxiety relief and effectiveness generally depends upon your individual pet.
Here at Super Cool Pets we have never bought into the advice that comforting a frightened pet actually intensifies their phobia. Glad to see that the well-respected, kindly dog trainer, veterinarian and author Patricia McConnell agrees in her excellent article on the subject over at The Bark:
On the contrary, it's just not possible that petting your dog is going to make her more fearful the next time there's a storm. Warnings that you'll ruin your dog by comforting her are reminiscent of the advice from the 1930s and '40s to avoid comforting frightened children by picking them up. That perspective was tossed out long ago by psychologists, when research made it clear that having parents they can count on when life gets scary creates bold, stable children, not dependent or fearful ones.
She suggests "classical counter-conditioning (CCC). CCC can be a profoundly effective way to change behavior, because it changes the emotions that drive the behavior in the first place. A typical example in applied animal behavior is having visitors throw treats to a dog who is afraid of strangers."

This new book Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog by Susannah Charleson should make a fascinating summer read for anyone interested in dog training and the human/animal bond. This book offers a glimpse into the world of a dog handler and her search and rescue missions with her Golden Retriever partner.
At the time of this writing, the author and her Golden Retriever Puzzle had spent several hundred training searches together. To be successful, not only did the pair have to create a strong bond, but they had to learn how to communicate in depth by decoding each others' body signals.

It is likely most of us will outlive our pets. In the aftermath of receiving sad health news about a pet, many pet owners will experience anticipatory grief. This book should help.
The Legacy of Beezer and Boomer: Lessons on Living and Dying from My Canine Brothers was written by the compassionate Doug Koktavy to share the coping strategies he learned on his own after his pet received a painful diagnosis. He developed a personalized version of a hospice plan for pets called the Presence Plan. It is designed to be an adjunct to the traditional treatment plan a vet provides to a client.
"If you share your life with pets who are truly your best friends or family, you must read Doug Koktavy's book. You'll relate to his life with his beloved Beezer and Boomer in a thousand ways. And your life will be richer from having met them." --Laurel Lagoni, president and CEO, World by the Tail, Inc.
