Amazon Hot New Pet Book Release -- An Eagle Named Freedom: My True Story of a Remarkable Friendship

Thumbnail image for jpg

If you are interested in the spiritual bonds humans form with their pets, here is an inspiring tale for you. When we are lucky enough to spot a soaring eagle above, we admire their majesty and beauty, but don't generally feel all warm and fuzzy. That's why this unusual story by Jeff Guidry, An Eagle Named Freedom: My True Story of a Remarkable Friendship, caught our eye, telling the tale of how the author rehabilitated an eagle who bonded with him during his battle with cancer.

From the moment Jeff Guidry saw the emaciated baby eagle with broken wings, his life was changed. For weeks he and the staff at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center tended to the grievously injured bird. Miraculously, she recovered, and Jeff, a center volunteer, became her devoted caretaker.

Though Freedom would never fly, she had Jeff as her wings. And after Jeff was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2000, Freedom returned his gift. Between sessions of debilitating chemotherapy, Jeff went back to Sarvey and began taking Freedom for walks that soothed his spirit and gave him the strength to fight. When he learned he was cancer free, Jeff's first stop was Sarvey to walk with Freedom. Somehow this special bird seemed to understand the significance of the day. For the very first time she wrapped both her wings around Jeff, enveloping him in an avian hug.

Home Decor with Pets in Mind

petcentricdesign.jpg

Decorate your home with your pets in mind. Some pet lovers not only buy pet supplies, but are creating their own animal-friendly design solutions in their home. The New York Times recently ran a fun article on pet-centric design, Raising the Bar on Pet Décor.

Amy Britton, an interior designer who owns Artisan Kitchens in Osterville, Mass., on Cape Cod, said that more of her clients are asking her to include amenities for their pets as part of their renovations. One example is a kitchen island with alcoves for food and water dishes, drawers for leashes and treats, and roll-out storage bins to hold bulk kibble.

Increase Litter Box Appeal for Your Cat

scoopfree719.jpg

A common problem for cat owners is getting their kitties to actually use their litter box. Recently we ran across a helpful article on the subject, 10 Tips for Maximizing Litter Box Appeal. These tips are offered by animal behaviorist Pam Johnson-Bennett, author of Starting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat where you can find more useful information. A summary of the litterbox tips:

1.  Most cats prefer a soft, unscented scoopable litter. Texture is important to cats and the feel of a soft substrate on their paws is generally more appealing. Also, with a cat's excellent sense of smell, the highly scented litters can be offensive.

2.  Use an uncovered box to allow for maximum comfort and to increase escape potential. Cats, especially in a multicat environment, need to feel they can easily escape from the box in order to prevent being ambushed by a companion cat.

3.  Keep the litter level of the box at about three inches. As you scoop soiled litter, be sure to top off the box to maintain a consistent level.

4.  Scoop waste from the box twice a day. Nobody wants to use an unflushed toilet.

5.  Thoroughly dump used litter and completely scrub the box once or twice a month. If the box still smells after being thoroughly scrubbed then it's time for a new one.

6.  The box should be the appropriate size for your cat. Don't ask a large cat to squeeze into a small box.

7.  In multicat households you should have the same number of boxes as cats.

8.  Don't place litter boxes all in one area. Scatter the boxes throughout the house so lower-ranking cats don't have to pass a higher-ranking cat's area and risk conflict.

9.  Don't locate the litter box near the cat's feeding station.

10.  Don't use litter box liners.

How to Find Appropriate Toys for Your Particular Cat

shinecattoys.jpg
Do your kitty cat's toys lie around the house abandoned and neglected? If so, it may be that your cat just has the wrong toys.

To solve this common problem, the helpful cat lovers at Yahoo Shine suggest performing a toy test. Try offering different types of toys to see what he/she likes or dislikes. Some recommended questions to ask yourself:

  • Does your cat prefer toys that have a soft mouth feel?
  • Does your cat prefer "air hunting" with toys that allow her to leap?
  • Does your cat seem intimidated by toys that make noise?
  • Do cloth-type toys annoy her because they get stuck in her claws or does she like that she can grasp them so easily?
  • Does your cat react more quickly to the life-like feathers on a particular toy?
  • Does she prefer toys with longer wands that keep you at more of a distance?
  • Are smaller toys preferred over larger ones?
  • Does the sound a particular toy makes as it moves on the floor trigger your cat's interest more than others?

Find super cool toys for your cat.

Avitech AviClean No-Rinse Bird Cage and Aviary Cleaner

We noticed the other day that there is a lot we haven't been noticing about our indoor bird cage. Definitely time for a scrub. One reason we avoid this task is that the most effective cage cleaners (and perch cleaner and toy cleaner) are not particularly healthy for our birds.

aviclean.jpg
Avitech AviClean Spray Cleaner will easily remove dried bird droppings, caked-on foods such as fruit, vegetables, nectar, pellets, hand-feeding formula, regurgitated substances. Use on cages, floors, carpets, toys, perches, walls.

AviClean is safe to use, with no scrubbing or rinsing. There is no need to remove your bird when you clean, and the formula won't harm the cage. It serves as a good deodorizer with a fresh minty smell. Great for dog and cat stains. too.

Consumer Reports Tests Mosquito and Tick repellents

repellents.gif

Every silver lining has a cloud and in summer it's mosquitoes and ticks. Not only are they annoying, but they can be hazardous to human and pet health. They definitely can interfere with the fun of playing with our pets outdoors and taking them for walks.

A recent Consumer Reports test found "six repellents protected against deer ticks and two common types of mosquitoes for 7 hours or more. Four of those contain deet in varying levels. The Environmental Protection Agency judges deet safe when used as directed."

The effective products include two types of "Off" and two deet-free:

offcliponmosqu.jpg

Another possibility is the battery-powered Off! Clip On Mosquito Protection with the claim of "head to toe protection up to 12 hours" on the package. Disappointingly, the folks at Consumer Reports abandoned testing their beleaguered subjects after two hours because of bites.
