PetScoop: FDA Cautions Buyer Beware If Purchasing Pet Drugs Online

Many of us try to save on costs by skirting our veterinarians and buying discount pet drugs online without a prescription. Some of the internet sites that sell pet drugs represent legitimate, reputable pharmacies (see links below), but not all. Alas, we may be buying drugs for our best pals from unscrupulous businesses operating illegally.
Buying prescription pet meds online without a prescription and even OTC meds may be risky, according to a recent FDA warning. The FDA has found companies that sell unapproved pet drugs and counterfeit pet products, make fraudulent claims, dispense prescription drugs without requiring a prescription, and sell expired drugs.
Is it worth the savings to possibly damage your pet's health and even maybe a life? Here's our solution. Many vets do indeed charge more for drugs than on-line sites, as they are, after all, trying to make a living. But when asked, some will price-match to products at certain legitimate on-line pharmacies. At very least, they often are willing to fax in your prescription to a reputable site.
If you do wish to shop online, try 1-800-PetMeds
with free shipping over $39 and PetCareRx
who ship free on your orders over $35. They will contact your veterinarian for you.

Amazon Hot New Pet Book Release -- Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard to Think Straight About Animals

We humans certainly are ambivalent about our relationships with animals. Ever wondered why dogs are food in some countries, but members of the family in others? Or why we happily wear leather shoes but condemn cruelty to animals? Most of us would say it's okay to feed a mouse to a pet snake, but not a kitten.
Hal Herzog, a professor of psychology at Western Carolina University, is regarded as a leading expert in the psychology of human-animal relations. He looks closely at the ethics and philosophy involved in our animal relationships in his new book, Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard to Think Straight About Animals
.
Here's a quick take on the book from Super Cool Pets favorite Patricia McConnell, author of The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs
:
The book combines stories and science in an accessible way. For example, researchers found that people really DO look like their dogs (at least, people can match which dog goes with which person, a fact I personally would argue is not quite the same thing) and that cat and dog lovers really do have slightly different personalities (dog people are more extroverted than cat people, but ironically, cat people are slightly more likely to be open to new experiences.)
But most of all, the book constantly reminds us that our interactions with animals are in part driven by genetics, in part by culture and experience, and as a result, are often irrational and contradictory. But if you're like me.... they are always fascinating.

PetScoop: Remove Household Pet Odors with Charcoal Briquettes

As we batten down the hatches this fall, we may start to notice a pervasive pet smell a little more than when balmy breezes were wafting through our rooms. To absorb pet odors (or any other kind) from the air in your home, Apartment Therapy recommends stashing a few charcoal briquettes
around the house:
As for how to distribute them, you can simply lay a few out in a metal tray. Other options: sew pouches for them or use an old sock, then hang them in inconspicuous areas. Line a basket with foil or plastic and lay the briquettes inside. Or simply set them out on a tray on a shelf or side table: the black little pillows actually look kind of cool!
Be sure to stick with the natural briquettes such as Kingsford Original Charcoal Briquets
and avoid the mesquite briquettes or ones with easy-light additives.

PetScoop: New Ornilux Windowpanes Help Prevent Bird Strikes

Hundreds, thousands of birds are injured, maimed and killed world-wide upon contact with reflective glass windows and panels. Birds see trees or the sky in the glass and fly right smack into it at their peril.
To make the glass more visible to birds, compassionate residential bird lovers often use closely-spaced opaque window decals
, or stencils painted with tempera as a warning. Recently conservationist and ecologically-minded designers have promoted glass as a building material, and it has gained popularity in the form of transparent panels. Likewise, the bird/glass fatality problem has become more complex.
The New York Times recently reported on an innovative new type of glass called Ornilux, made by Arnold Glas of Remshalden, Germany. The glass is made with a patterned coating that reflects ultraviolet light, visible to birds, but still transparent to the human eye. It is, of course, more expensive than regular glass.

PetScoop -- Vet Study Concludes All Cats Should Wear Collars

Here's a good excuse to start shopping! The New York Times reports the scary stat that "less than 2 percent of cats in animal shelters make it back to their owners, whereas about 15 to 19 percent of dogs are returned, and one reason is that more dogs wear collars."
Does your kitty wear a cat collar
? If you answer no, it may be time to rethink that decision, according to the findings of a new study published in The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Cats were randomly assigned to wear 1 of 3 types of collars: plastic buckle, breakaway plastic buckle safety, and elastic stretch safety. Each cat was fitted with the assigned collar, and a microchip was inserted SC between the scapulae.
The result was that 391 of the 538 (72.7%) cats successfully wore their collars for the entire 6-month study period:
Most cats successfully wore their collars. Because even house cats can become lost, veterinarians should recommend that all cats wear identification collars since they are the most obvious means of identifying an owned pet.
For some cats, collars may frequently come off and become lost; therefore, microchips are an important form of backup identification.
Owners should select a collar that their cat will tolerate and should check it often to ensure a proper fit.
So time to get cracking! There's nice-looking cat collar selections at Amazon,

Pet Hair Removal -- Consumer Reports Tests Pledge Fabric Sweeper Against Adhesives

Consumerist reports that their "test-happy kin at Consumer Reports" tested the Pledge Fabric Sweeper for Pet Hair
against three different adhesive-based products to see how they stacked up against each other picking up pet fur. The result? All the products did a decent job of lifting up the pet hair.
The downside to the adhesive items is that they require the beleaguered pet owner to constantly remove the the fur-covered sheets, as you probably know yourself. The upside to the Pledge product is that it is easy to use and clean up.

And here's a tip on how to save money on the Pledge. Read our post this past spring on how to reuse the Pledge Fabric Sweeper for Pet Hair
rather than tossing it after every use.
