Halloween Costumes for Pets -- Is it a Good Thing?

petcostume103110.jpg

Halloween is no longer just a child's holiday in America--these days adults and even our pets are putting on costumes and celebrating. But not everyone sees this as a good thing, particularly where our pets are concerned.

The New Yorker enters the pet costume debate in On Dressing Up Your Pets by Alexandra Horowitz, the author of Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know:

What might a dog (or cat or hamster or parrot) think of being costumed and festooned, or forced to don a hat and fake mustache in our celebration of Halloween? Inasmuch as I can speak to the experience of any animal (including members of my own species), my answer is "The dog, he does not like it".

But she sees both sides and writes an interesting article.

The Houston Chronicle also examines the issue in Experts differ on whether Halloween costumes embarrass dogs. Sonya Fitzpatrick, author of Sonya Fitzpatrick, the Pet Psychic: What the Animals Tell Me testifies:

I talk to thousands of animals, and even if people laugh at them if they have been cut too short, it really hurts their feelings," she said. She has seven dogs and uses only bandannas for their accessories.

And Tamar Geller, author of 30 Days to a Well-Mannered Dog: The Loved Dog Method claims that "dogs don't like to stand out."

In any event, considering life's vicissitudes, pet costumes are relatively minor. These are the most-searched Halloween costumes for dogs in 2010, according to Yahoo!

1. Batman
2. Ewok
3. Slinky dog
4. Yoda
5. Taco

What's your opinion? Do you like to dress up your pets and do you think they enjoy it?

Walk the Dog -- Americans Walking Less Than Those in Other Countries

walkpet1027.jpg

Apparently Americans are more sedentary than adults in other countries. Are we surprised? According to a study named in a recent NY Times health column Well, men and women living in the United States took fewer steps per day than those living in Switzerland, Australia, and Japan:

The fitness gap detected by the pedometer studies is equal to about 30 to 40 minutes of walking each day. One mile of walking covers about 2,000 steps, researchers say. The health community typically urges people to take at least 10,000 steps a day to maintain good health, which is equal to about five miles of walking.

Another reason to keep on keeping on with the dog walks or starting a new regimen. Our dogs love the stimulation, and the fresh air is good for everyone.

accusplitped.jpgyamaxpedi.jpg
If you want to measure your daily steps, simple pedometers are affordable. The article recommends the ACCUSPLIT AE120XL Pedometer and the Fit Solutions SW-200 Yamax Digiwalker Pedometer, both widely used in pedometer research and tested for reliability.

Dogs Notice Our Every Move -- Tell Me Who's Watching by Lisa Hartman

dogwatching.jpg

Have you ever noticed that your dogs are always watching you? They notice details many humans overlook -- small things mean a lot. They know your routine and when you change your behavior. An engrossing article by trainer Lisa Hartman on dogs' obsession with their humans, Tell Me Who's Watching, will strike a chord with all of us who live with dogs.

"Every breath you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you." While this line from a popular song written by Sting was about obsessive love, the lyrics could equally be applied to your dog. Did you know you are training your dog even when you are not trying to train him? Every move you make sends a message to your dog and unofficially trains him to behave a certain way.

dialdynamitedog.jpgLisa Hartman is a well known and respected New York and Miami dog trainer and author of DIAL A DYNAMITE DOG, a dog training book that "cuts to the chase" and speaks to the pet owner in "plain english".

Manage Canine Intestinal Distress -- Iams Veterinary Formula Prostora

iamsprostora.jpg

We feel so badly for our dogs when they have intestinal distress...and also for ourselves if they don't make it to the door! No one wants to go off to work and leave their sick pet indoors all day. A solution -- keep some Iams Veterinary Formula Prostora Max handy for sudden illness and accidents.

Prostora is administered as a convenient, tasty treat that will go down the hatch easily. It is made with Bifidalis, a clinically-proven strain of a live and active culture, to help maintain your dog's digestive balance. Apparently, it also helps reduce cosmetic tear stains, preferred by one vet over the ever-popular Angels' Eyes.

From Patty Khuly, VMD, blogging at Fully Vetted:

These vanilla-flavored chews are easily tolerated by dogs. I use Iams' Prostora to keep diarrhea episodes to a minimum of days, but did you know they also help with reducing tear stains in dogs? Please don't use those antibiotic-based Angel Eyes! If you must use something to reduce the [purely cosmetic] tear stains, use this!

Crush Pet Pills Up in an Automatic Pill Grinder

This handheld Automatic Pill Grinder is just the ticket if you live with a pet (or human) who can't or won't swallow pills. Just grind their tablet-type pills straight in to their food or beverage--problem solved!

Coyotes: Misunderstood, Out There and Here to Stay

coyotes910.jpg

Did you know that our domestic dogs can successfully interbreed with wolves and coyotes? These three are all species in the genus Canis, to which the dog, as you likely know, belongs. This has led to a "genetic mess" that researchers sometimes refer to as "Canis soupus", according to a recent NY Times article on coyotes, Mysteries That Howl and Hunt:

Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris), coyotes (or Canis latrans, meaning "barking dog") and and every kind of wolf, from the red wolf to the Eastern wolf to the gray wolf (Canis lupus), can mate and produce perfectly healthy pups.

It's worthwhile getting to know coyotes, the wily but misunderstood cousin of our beloved domestic dog, since most of them live in suburbia, where a lot of us live. And apparently there are more around than previously thought. This short article will get you started. Here's a clip:

coyoteatkitchdoor.jpg
For a better understanding of these mysterious animals, read Coyote at the Kitchen Door: Living with Wildlife in Suburbia by Stephen DeStefano, a wildlife biologist with the United States Geological Survey's Massachusetts Cooperative Research Unit. He narrates the travels of a female coyote, portraying coyotes not as urban "pests" but as animals that deserve our respect.
