PetScoop: Westminster Dog Show Best in Show 2011

Congratulations to the 2011 Westminster Dog Show Best In Show trophy winner "GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind" a.k.a. "Hickory," a Scottish Deerhound.

The New York Times has created a fabulous Best in Breed interactive slide show of the 102 lucky dogs. And as they point out, At Westminster Dog Show, Familiar Breeds Get Little Respect:

So perhaps it is not surprising that the Labrador retriever has never won Best in Show in Westminster's 135 years. Other breeds better known as pets have also been overlooked. The golden retriever has never won, either, and the German shepherd and the pug have only won once apiece. In 2008, Uno the beagle became a household name after he was the first of his breed to win the top prize.

As with people, there are many different doggy lifestyles.

Yes, they are pampered and famous. But after checking out life as a show dog

we're thinking maybe that's just not for us.

Dog and Cat Escape Preventer

This Dog and Cat Escape Preventer is a retractable pet barrier that prevents pets from running outside when you greet guests at the door. As opposed to your typical pet gate, this barrier is opaque and prevents pets from seeing what's outside, causing them to lose interest.

The vinyl gate is tear- and puncture-resistant. It unclips from the door and automatically retracts for storage in the housing unit.

Amazon Hot New Pet Book Release -- Good Old Dog: Expert Advice for Keeping Your Aging Dog Happy, Healthy, and Comfortable

The good news is that more and more of our pets are living to a ripe old age these days, but the bad news is that caring for an elderly pet presents its own set of challenges.

• Nutritional advice--not every senior diet is right for every senior dog
• Emphasis on treating conditions common to older dogs so they live longer
• How to evaluate complicated procedures and decide what's right for your dog
• The cost of caring for an older dog and how to shoulder the burden
• How to identify cognitive decline and how to manage it
• Advice on creating a healthy and comfortable environment

PetScoop: Minneapolis Woman Tries to Air-Mail Puppy

This Consumerist account of pet cruelty sounds too awful (and really stupid, frankly) to be true, but it appeared originally on the Minneapolis-St. Paul StarTribune. A 39-year-old woman named Stacey Champion has been cited with misdemeanor animal cruelty after she tried to air-mail a puppy to Atlanta from downtown Minneapolis.

The postal worker was stunned when the package moved by itself and fell to the floor. Then came the sounds of heavy panting.

Within minutes, she and co-workers had unwrapped a tightly sealed box and rescued a 4-month-old puppy that a Minneapolis woman tried to mail to Georgia.

"It's just crazy," said Minneapolis Police Sgt. Angela Dodge. The air holes the woman punched in the box were covered up with mailing tape, and the priority mail trip would have taken at least two days, she said. "It was supposed to be a birthday gift for a family member. It would have been kind of traumatizing to get a dead puppy,'' Dodge said. "If you don't identify it so that it can be handled properly, it goes into the cargo hold of an airplane. It gets 40 below in those cargo planes that get up 40,000 feet. And there was no food or water. Puppies can't go for long periods without food or water."

The dog would have been dead on delivery, agreed police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer. "I've been doing this for 17 years. This is a new one on me."

After being charged, Champion returned to the post office to demand a refund for the $22 she paid to mail the puppy.

GoodGuide Pet Food Ratings

Pet food ingredient and nutrition labels are difficult to decipher. The integrity of the manufacturers is suspect. Generally, pet owners are left in the dark as to the actual nutritional content of the food we feed our pets.

The beta site Good Guide has stepped in with information and ratings on 1524 pet food products, broken down by individual brands, as well as categories dog dry food, cat dry food, dog wet food, cat wet food. Their methodology is based on:

  1. the nutritional adequacy of the food, as demonstrated by feeding trials or formulation testing
  2. caloric content disclosure
  3. life stage specificity
  4. an assessment of whether product ingredients are desirable in high quantities, desirable or less desirable

According to the GoodGuide criteria, the best pet food for dogs is Hill's Science Diet Healthy Mobility Adult Dog Food and for cats Innova Kitten Flex Chicken & Brown Rice Stew.

The worst are Kibbles 'n Bits Wholesome Medley Dry Dog Food and 9 Lives Chicken & Tuna Dinner Cat Food.
