Amazon.com Hot New Pet Book Release -- Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom

unlikelyfriendships.JPG

As our cockatiel wanders around the floor at Super Cool Pets headquarters, we find ourselves pondering the unusual bonds that develop between humans and their animals and birds. In a similar vein, Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom tells tales of animals and birds who unexpectedly and inexplicably bond with each other.

National Geographic magazine writer Jennifer Holland relays well-documented stories of the friendships of Koko the gorilla and All Ball the kitten, the hippo Owen and the tortoise Mzee, and amazing stories of predators befriending prey--an Indian leopard slips into a village every night to sleep with a calf. We love the heartwarming tales of a lioness who mothers a baby oryx, a cat and a bird, a mare and a fawn, an elephant and a sheep, a snake and a hamster. A lesson for us all.

Eliminate Household Pet Odors with Vanilla Extract

catdog.jpg

As the days grow shorter, they grow colder. We will be shutting our windows, closing our doors and turning up the thermostat. Without the fresh air wafting through our home, the pungent smell of dirty paws and coats, kitty litter, shedded fur, and pet accidents will likely reassert itself.

vanilla.jpg

A little vanilla extract will easily and quickly eliminate pet odors permeating your house. Lifehacker | Eric Shawn has a handy tip for houses that have started smelling a little funky:

Put two caps full of vanilla extract in a coffee cup, then place it in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour. Within twenty minutes the whole house smells like Heaven.

They say this is a Realtor trick, but no sane Realtor would incur the liability of turning on a homeowner's oven. If you are not a fan of vanilla scent, any fruit or flora extract that you like will do.

We like these tips from Dog Food Factoids: Ten You Need To Know! | The Millionaire Nurse Blog:

  • Dry dog food is the most economical.
  • Dogs have food allergies, pay attention and adjust as necessary.
  • The ingredient list on food bags matters-learn what to look for.< Click above graphic for common pet food ingredients. /li>
  • Not one commercial dog food on the local Wal-Mart shelves is on any 'best dry dog food list'.
  • Just because your dog will eat it, doesn't mean it's good for him.
  • There are more dog foods available than paparazzi following Prince William and the new bride.
  • Dogs are often over fed by their loving owners.
  • The FDA is responsible for dog food safety.
  • There are quite a few common people foods dogs should never eat.

PetScoop -- Annual and Monthly Costs of Pet Care

new_pet_adoption.jpg

It's probably gotten to be a cliche now to say that pets are part of our families. They are, at least for most of us, and along with the love comes the bills. ASPCA | Pet Care Costs has calculated that first year costs for pet food and supplies run between $1,300 and $1850 for a dog, depending upon size, and around $1,000 for a cat. Fish are by far the most economical, coming in at $35/year.

These figures include pet health insurance, an investment which relatively few pet owners actually make. Considering Pet Ownership? Here's How Much to Budget | MintLife Blog has taken their numbers and created a nifty graphic, breaking the annual and Mint-user monthly costs down by category. They don't include the initial capital investment such as cage, cage, carrier, leash, aquarium.

Risk of Salmonella Contamination from Dog and Cat Food and Treats

catdogfoodbowls.jpg

Canned and dried dog and cat food can become contaminated either during production or storage. Pig ears and similar treats that involve dried animal parts can cause salmonella infection in people. Salmonella Lurks in Pet Foods Too | NYTimes explains:

Dried pet food typically is heated to high temperatures that kill bacteria before it is shaped into different shapes of kibble. But dry food is not necessarily produced under sterile conditions, and contamination can occur at various stages in the production process, veterinarians say. Canned food, by contrast, is vacuum-sealed and sterilized but can be contaminated after it is opened if improperly stored or handled.

pigear.jpg

Pig ears, which are frozen, cleaned and flavored but not cooked, may become contaminated from the original animal carcass. One study in Canada found that 51 percent of pig ears purchased at stores contained salmonella; another study also found high rates of contamination, 41 percent, in pig ears sold in the United States.

Moral of the story -- everyone who lives or works with pets should thoroughly wash their hands before and after handling pet food.

Organic Diatomaceous Earth -- Natural Topical Pest Control Powder for Pets

diaearth.jpg

Diatomaceous earth is formed from soft, siliceous sedimentary rock crushed into a fine light-colored powder. It is derived from freshwater sources and does not pose a significant health risk to pets or humans. Due to its absorbency, it is used as a primary ingredient in a type of cat litter.

Because food-grade diatomaceous earth is harmless to all animals, fish, and birds, it makes an excellent natural insecticide. Use it as a topical dusting powder for your pets with fleas, ticks, lice and other external pests. The D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) scratches the insect's waxy outer shell causing death by dehydration.

This is a refreshing change from toxic pesticides. Get your own Diatomaceous Earth.
