Survey Says: Golden Retrievers Attract Both Men and Women to Possible Mates -- Does Your Pet Affect Your Social Life?

dalmatians_park.jpg

In the fantastic Disney movie 101 Dalmatians the dogs actually brought the couple together. Roger Radcliffe's enterprising dalmatian Pongo decided to find a wife for Roger and a mate for himself and arranged a meeting in the park with a woman named Anita and her female dalmatian, Perdita.

If you are single and have issues with your social life, your dog's breed may be a factor. The pet social network Klooff surveyed 1,000 people to find out the top 5 breeds that make single men and women more desirable to date. Check out the gallery at Dog breeds that will get you a date (or not) | Boston.com to find out which breeds can help (and hurt) you on the dating scene.

summerdog.jpg

epipetsunscreen.jpg

Now that we are in the dog days of summer, could your pet possibly get a sunburn? We all slather on the lotion, but many of our pets are also subjected to the strong sun.

Basically any dog with shaved, short and/or thin hair, white and light hair, white and pink skin should be protected with Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen Spray. It is the only F.D.A. compliant sunscreen for dogs and horses and is waterproof, but not greasy, with a nice vanilla scent.

It should also be considered for dogs who go boating, swimming and hanging out at the beach or pool, at the dog park, and other dogs who spent a lot of time in the sun.

If your pet has allergic and inflamed skin, please check with your veterinarian. This product should NOT be used on cats.

On Mysterious Cat Behavior -- 5 Ways Cats Show Affection and More

catheadbutt.jpg

Dogs express their love and affection very openly through tail-wagging, nuzzling, pawing and kisses. Cats are a lot more subtle, no surprise there.

Here are some common signs of cat affection from Decoding How Cats Show Affection | Petside:

  • Eye blinks: When a cat meets a stranger for the first time, they give them an unblinking stare. They are wary. Cats that feel trust and affection for a human often blink at them.

  • Grooming: When your cat allows you to groom him, this is another sure sign that he trusts you and feels cat affection for you.

  • Head rubbing: When a cat rubs her face on a human, she is using scent glands on her cheeks to mark her territory. this can both mean affection, and that she is claiming the human in question as her "property."

  • Belly display: This sign of cat affection is one of the most profound acts of trust a cat can bestow on a human.

  • Kneading: A cat kneading against your body is an act of sheer contentment, trust and true adoration

Vet Recommends High Protein Food for Your Elderly Pet

highproteinpetfood.JPG

If you have an elderly pet, you may have heard you should cut back on the protein. But feeding him or her more protein may be a good thing, according to Geriatric Pets Need More Protein:

It is commonly believed that feeding geriatric dogs and cats normal or high amounts of protein can cause kidney disease or make existing kidney disease worse. Food manufacturers prey on this belief by offering lower protein foods for geriatric dogs and cats, when in actuality, geriatric pets benefit from higher protein diets.

In fact, the prolonged feeding of special veterinary kidney diets to pets without clinical signs of kidney disease can actually cause unnecessary muscle loss, a compromised immune system, and osteoporosis.

So we are going to check out High Protein Dog Food and High Protein Cat Food. As always, this is not a medical blog, so for more info please confer with your vet and read Geriatric Pets Need More Protein.

Drown Out Scary Thunder Sounds for Your Pet with a iPhone/iPod Speaker System

altecspeaker.jpg

Our Golden Retrievers live in the lightning capital of the world. Where there is lightning, there is thunder--scary thunder. One of them is panting nervously now by our side even as we post.

There are numerous theories as to why pets are so frightened of thunder. Every being responds individually to their environment and in this dog's case, we suspect thunder sounds a lot like the roar of an unknown and very huge terrifying beast coming to get her.

So since we love our doggie, we drown the beast out. Experts recommend calming music, which seems to help. We pull up Pandora on our iPhone, select the Calm Meditations station, and plug the iPhone into our portable Altec Lansing IMT320 inMotion Compact iPod Speaker System. We rev up the music, place it on the counter by the dark closet/cave she hides in, and off she drifts, generally.

altecspeakerportable.jpg

This light-weight speaker system folds as slim as a book, so you can easily take it with you and enjoy good-quality music on your iPhone or iPod wherever you go. The inMotion Compact has an attached wrap-around cover which protects the speakers and doubles as a stand.

Push-button volume controls are integrated directly into the top of the speaker. The iMT320's universal dock recharges your iPod or iPhone while you're listening to music, and it can be powered by either an AC adapter or four AA batteries (not included) when an outlet is not available.

Pet's Water Cooler

petsfrobowatercooler.jpg

The heat wave in many parts of the country has been relentless. Tough for people to stay cool and hydrated with (or without!) power, not to mention our sweet pets. In hot weather ice cubes keep water cold but melt so quickly. Pet fountains require electricity or batteries.

This Pet's Water Cooler keeps an 8-hour supply of water for a pet chilled all day long using a removable insert lined with non-toxic gel. Includes a second insert for use while the other one is chilling in the freezer. Holds 24 ounces.
