After a long, leisurely summer of enjoying our meals outdoors, we are thinking of upgrading our now-grimy pet food and water bowls. These non-skid Bella Bowls for both cats and dogs combine a stainless interior with an attractive poly-resin exterior.
Their stainless steel interior resists bacteria. A removable soy-based rubber ring on the bottom prevents spills and reduces the clattering noise that ensues as the bowl is nosed around the room. Available in 4 sizes and a palette of decorative colors, above.

Leaving dog waste in public parks is a health hazard and just plain unsanitary. Here at SCP headquarters we try to use left-over supermarket plastic grocery bags, but they get gross and are sometimes so heavily re-cycled that they rip in your hands.
These paw print designed Potty Paws bags make for easy and convenient pet waste pickup. Simply place the bag over your hand to pick up waste, then turn the bag inside out and zip-seal it shut. Use in your backyard or on walks in the park. Cute!

Don't look now but soon many of our days and nights are going to get cold, very cold. Hard to believe after this sweltering summer, but it's true. Time to start thinking about our cooler-weather wardrobe, starting with lounge-wear because lounging around is what we like to do, especially when it's cold.
We show the love for Golden Retrievers or Labs by embroidering their image on this luxurious, best-selling Women's Dog Breed Fleece Bathrobe. This thick but lightweight fleece bathrobe falls to the ankles with a full snap front and rib-knit collar and cuffs. Great gift at Amazon and Orvis.

If you shop at Wal-Mart, but for obvious reasons buy your dog food somewhere else, you may want to reconsider. Wal-Mart Stores Inc is launching its own brand of "ultra premium" dog food to better compete with specialty chains such as PetSmart and Petco.
The new brand will be called Pure Balance, an expansion on Wal-Mart's Ol' Roy brand, which was named after one of founder Sam Walton's hunting dogs. Each one of their super premium recipes contains no corn, wheat or soy with no fillers, artificial flavors or preservatives.

We know it's always a bad idea to leave a dog alone in a car, especially one with no ventilation. Humans being what they are, however, these things happen. So even if you just dash into a shop for a second, soon a new internet-connected dog collar can notify you if your pet is overheated.
The Dog Caller will use a coded chip, a SIM card and a thermistor to send an alert to the owner's mobile phone when the temperature reaches around 26 degrees Celsius/78.8 degrees Fahrenheit around the dog. Rethink Toronto says the "Dog Caller" should be available next year for around $20.

Here at SCP headquarters, we find it necessary to place a rug underneath our food and water bowls. Keeps them in place and sort of camouflages the ubiquitous slobber and mess.
But the slobber and mess take their toll and wear the rugs out. We like the earth-tones of this jute Dog Bone Braided Rug for the perfect finishing touch for under the dog bowls or as a cute accent anywhere in the house.

Our dogs rely on us to keep them healthy, happy and fit. If you are noticing any discomfort and tenderness after normal everyday activity, reduced activity levels and maybe a ho-hum interest in playtime, your dog may need some joint care. Reluctance and hesitation to run, jump, walk, sit, or navigate flights of stairs or hills are pretty clear-cut manifestations of a dog in pain.
Our Super Cool Pets veterinarian and many others recommend GLC 1000 - 180 Caps for older and less mobile dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes. Its formula is a composition of all four spectrum glucosamines to help maintain cartilage and hydration. Also available as GLC 1000 Powder to control the dose. When in doubt, ask for your vet's opinion.

Many of us like to exercise with our dogs. We dug up some timely Safety tips for running with your dog | Health & Fitness Blog | Projo.com from Pamela Reinsel Cotter (via Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow).
It's always recommended to bring a water supply along when exercising or for any outing with your pets -- these Handi-Drink Portable Water Bottles work well. It is not our custom here at SCP to refer to dogs as "Fido", but that aside, a summary:
Start slow - If Fido has never been out for a run with you, don't expect him to be up for a marathon.
Be mindful of the weather - Dogs can overheat very quickly and cause heat stroke.
Wear proper accessories - If running in the dark, be sure that you and Fido accessorize with some reflective gear so that you are visible to traffic.
Watch out for Fido's feet - Pavement and asphalt gets incredibly hot on summer days and can quickly burn your pup's feet. Gravel can be dangerous as well.
Hydrate - Make sure Fido has had a chance to drink water and hydrate before you take him out on a run.
Keep a watchful eye - Dogs are people pleasers and if you want to keep running, dogs will often work to keep up even if they may be in pain.
Lather up - Believe it or not, dogs are susceptible to sunburns. If you're running on a sunny day, be sure to apply sunscreen to both yourself and Fido if your dog has shorter hair or are a lighter color.
Eating before or after running - Make sure that your dog does not eat one hour before or after running. Some dogs are susceptible to bloat and eating too close to exercising can be extremely dangerous.

Our dogs and cats are generally not allergic to poison ivy, sumac or oak like their human guardians, but they sure can transmit the toxic plant oil sticking to their fur to any humans who pat and hug them afterwards.
The offending urushiol oil on these plants is very hardy and persistent. Even if someone doesn't get anywhere near the plants, contact with the oil on any other surface can still cause the miserable blisters and rashes on human skin.
If you have ANY reason to suspect your pet's coat has touched poison ivy, sumac or oak, unless you want to scratch and suffer for a week or two, don't mess around. Tips from Getting Rid Of Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac on Pets| About.com Veterinary Medicine:
Getting Rid of Urushiol Oils on Your Pets
A bath is in order. Here are some tips to make the pet bathing as effective as possible for removing this stubborn plant oil.
- Wear rubber gloves.
- Use a barrier cream, such as a lotion containing bentoquatum, on your arms and skin not protected by gloves. Ref: CDC prevention tips
- Use copious amounts of cool water, for a long period of time.
- Use a "degreasing" soap, such as Dawn dishwashing detergent, to remove the oils from your pet's coat.
Any soap that effectively cuts oil such as Burt's Bees Poison Ivy Soap should be effective on your skin and their coat.
