Hand-Carved Peruvian Gourd Birdhouses

Thumbnail image for peruvianbirdhouses.JPG

Do something a little different with your backyard and provide bird housing at the same time. These hand-crafted Peruvian Gourd Birdhousesicon perpetuate the ancient art of Peruvian gourd carving. Because they are made from natural gourds, each one will have its own unique variations. From the birdhouse siteicon:

The art of gourd carving was developed in Peru over the course of 4,000 years. Artisans carefully scrape away the green outer layer, and dry them in the sun. They use sharp knives to score lines into the yellow surface, and use fire to shade their distinctive illustrations with browns and blacks.

Each birdhouse has a shaded, 1.25" diameter opening and three drainage holes. If it gets hot where you are, it might not be a bad idea to drill additional ventilation holes near the top. In two styles: Carved Owl or Owl in the Woods.

Bird Arm Perch

armperch.jpg

Many of our live-in birds thrive on human companionship. One way to increase bonding opportunities is to carry your bird around with you more often. The issue there is that birds have sharp claws and beaks, and we have vulnerable skin.

This Bird Arm Perch makes it less likely your bird will grip you tightly with the claws or nip your arm with his or her beak. The sleeve fits over the forearm and secures with elastic laces. The easy-grip surface helps birds feel secure--thus less likely to tense up, nip and claw.

Reality Birding -- The Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds by Richard Crossley

crossleyidguide.jpg

Is a picture worth a thousand words? Reliance on imaging (rather than imagining) seems to be the 21st century media trend. This The Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds by Richard Crossley helps make birdwatching and identification easier, more accurate, and more fun. The product description says it best:

Unlike other guides, which provide isolated individual photographs or illustrations, this is the first book to feature large, lifelike scenes for each species. These scenes--640 in all--are composed from more than 10,000 of the author's images showing birds in a wide range of views--near and far, from different angles, in various plumages and behaviors, including flight, and in the habitat in which they live.

These beautiful compositions show how a bird's appearance changes with distance, and give equal emphasis to characteristics experts use to identify birds: size, structure and shape, behavior, probability, and color. This is the first book to convey all of these features visually--in a single image--and to reinforce them with accurate, concise text.

Each scene provides a wealth of detailed visual information that invites and rewards careful study, but the most important identification features can be grasped instantly by anyone.

Squirrel Spinner Feeder -- Keep Squirrels Away from Your Bird Feeders

squirrelspinner.jpg

Much to our surprise, recently here at Super Cool Pets headquarters a bold and brassy squirrel chewed through the screen on our porch and invaded our roomy cockatiel bird cage hanging out there. Luckily, it was a hot day and our birds were chilling indoors.

Needless to say, a boundary has been crossed. No, he/she was not desperate for food as there is plenty of bird seed out in the yard, and it is summer after all. We would rather the squirrels left the bird cages and feeders alone.

This Squirrel Spinner Feeder is one way to keep the squirrels away from your bird feeders. Attach two ears of corn and mount it on any tree, fence, or post using the attached screw-mount. The squirrel's weight causes the 9" arms to spin for hours of entertainment.

At Amazon and Plow and Hearth where you can use code: LNKPH199 to pay only $1.99 standard shipping on orders $75 or more.
