Awkward Family Pet Photos by screenwriter Mike Bender and TV producer Doug Chernack is a laugh-out-loud tribute to the strong, but sometimes, embarrassing bond between people and their pets.

Amazon Hot New Pet Book -- Part Wild: One Woman's Journey with a Creature Caught Between the Worlds of Wolves and Dogs by Ceiridwen Terrill

partwild.jpg

Many of us who love our dogs are also fascinated by their relative, the wolf. What would it be like to have a dog-wolf hybrid? Part Wild: One Woman's Journey with a Creature Caught Between the Worlds of Wolves and Dogs by Ceiridwen Terrill tells the tale of the author's adoption and life with a wolfdog--part husky, part gray wolf--named Inyo.

Apparently she picked a wolf-dog hybrid to protect herself from an abusive ex-boyfriend who was stalking her, but may have bit off more than she could chew. If you are romantic about the nature of wolves as many of us are, this book likely will relieve you of that fantasy.

In her quest to understand the differences between domesticated dogs and wild wolves, Terrill did spend five years interviewing genetics experts, wolf biologists, dog trainers, and wolf rescuers in the United States, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, and Russia. An informative and moving animal saga, this book is honest and straightforward and will leave you much more appreciative of your own dog.

For a fascinating review and more on wolf-dogs, read the blog entry at The Other End of the Leash | Patricia McConnell.

Amazon.com Hot New Pet Book Release -- Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend by Susan Orlean

rintintin.jpg

Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend by The New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean is the well-researched story of the line of related German Shepherd dogs featured in 20th century fictional stories on film, radio and television. The story spans 90 years and 11 generations of Rin Tin Tin descendants, providing a fascinating history of the rise of Hollywood, dogs in film and war, and the animal-human bond.

rintintin.gif

The true saga begins back in France near the end of World War I, when an American soldier, Lee Duncan, discovered a newborn German shepherd in the ruins of a bombed-out dog kennel. Mr Duncan brought "Rinty" back to Calfornia, taught him tricks and successfully launched him on a motion picture and radio career. Rin Tin Tin has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1623 Vine St.

Baby Boomers will remember The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, an ABC television series which ran from October 1954 to May 1959. It usually starred Rin Tin Tin's descendant, Rin Tin Tin IV, in the lead role.

Amazon Hot New Pet Book -- The Divine Life of Animals: One Man's Quest to Discover Whether the Souls of Animals Live On

divinelifeanimals.jpg

Do you ever wonder if animals have souls? Are they nothing more than a biological accident, or do they survive the death of their body? Perhaps the strength of the human-animal bond indicates there is more to our earthly existence than meets the eye.

Guideposts writer Ptolemy Tompkins tackles this heavy-duty question in The Divine Life of Animals: One Man's Quest to Discover Whether the Souls of Animals Live On. Through researching 20,000 years of the world's history and myth, he discovers that many spiritual traditions have addressed the subject of animal spirituality arriving at conclusions you may not expect.

unlikelyfriendships.JPG

As our cockatiel wanders around the floor at Super Cool Pets headquarters, we find ourselves pondering the unusual bonds that develop between humans and their animals and birds. In a similar vein, Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom tells tales of animals and birds who unexpectedly and inexplicably bond with each other.

National Geographic magazine writer Jennifer Holland relays well-documented stories of the friendships of Koko the gorilla and All Ball the kitten, the hippo Owen and the tortoise Mzee, and amazing stories of predators befriending prey--an Indian leopard slips into a village every night to sleep with a calf. We love the heartwarming tales of a lioness who mothers a baby oryx, a cat and a bird, a mare and a fawn, an elephant and a sheep, a snake and a hamster. A lesson for us all.
