Pet Scoop on Pet Insurance Policies--To Insure or Not to Insure?

To insure or not to insure? This can easily be a $1,000 question.

On a recent Saturday evening, our Golden Retriever Jesse bounded out of the back of our SUV onto the ramp before it was secured to the bumper. Both she and the ramp fell to the ground, with our Jess nursing an injured paw. Not only were we momentarily chagrined about her sprain and possible break, we were envisioning the cavernous hole a trip to the Vet Emergency Clinic on a weekend night would make in our bank account.

Since our pets are cherished members of our families, we want to provide them with the best medical care we can afford and keep them healthy for as long as we possibly can. As a result, our veterinary care is growing more expensive. Miami-Dade vet blogger Doolittler has started a series of timely articles Doolitter's vetcentric take on pet insurance, which may help you make up your mind whether to purchase a Pet Insurance Policy.

When the care vets can provide begins to outstrip your ability to pay for it, something's gotta give. In this case it's the insurance companies...giving you the ability to pay for care you might never have considered twenty years ago--for a fee.

The purpose of insurance in this setting is to help you pay for the growing expense involved in pet illness and injury. If your pet lives a healthy life, the monthly premiums you pay for pet insurance is overkill--you'll lose money in the long run. When she surprises you with a midnight snack of antifreeze, however, pet insurance might just make the difference between high-tech treatment and instant euthanasia.

Peace of mind and tragedy aversion is the name of the game when it comes to pet health insurance. Those of us with substantial expendable savings? Statistically, we're better off without it. After all, the insurance companies are in the biz to make a profit. But how many of us can boast a lotto-size stash under the mattress?

If you would like to research pet insurance policies, try PETCO Insure your Pets Today and QuickCare Pet Insurance.

Care and Feeding of Our Pets--New Book Releases

Do you ever wonder if you are feeding your pet the most nutritious food? Whether you should really be throwing them scraps, or if their recent illness was caused by their diet? The pet food recall of 2007 reminded us all that we can't take pet nutrition for granted anymore. Here are a few of the new books out on the all important subject of food and fuel for our pets.

For a comprehensive guide, pick up a copy of Ultimate Pet Food Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Feeding Your Dog or Cat by Liz Palika. This book covers it all--homemade, commercial, and raw food diets. The author discusses introducing new foods; what "human foods" pets shouldn't eat; free-feeding; responsibility for food safety; where ingredients come from; and red flags in ingredients.

If you like to cook for your pets, you can choose from more than fifty veterinarian- and pet-nutritionist-approved recipes, along with diets tailored to special-needs pets, such as puppies/kittens and pregnant, older, overweight and/or more sedentary animals.

Natural Nutrition for Cats: The Path to Purr-fect Health by Kymythy R. Schultze, "exposes the pitfalls of the pet-food industry." You will benefit from the author's extensive knowledge of proper feline nutrition. She updates the information from her previous books, Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats and The Natural Nutrition No-Cook Book, writing with charm and humor. You will love the photos.

If you are contemplating a new puppy, or have just brought one into your home, Puppy Preschool, Revised Edition: Raising Your Puppy Right---Right from the Start! by John Ross and Barbara McKinney is a must-read. It is filled with great advice for the first-time dog owner, as well as a refresher course for repeat owner. The premise of the books is that you should always train from the canine point of view.

In the first chapter, which is critical to puppy-rearing success, they outline their underlying training philosophy and consider who should own a dog. In succeeding chapters, they cover choosing the right puppy (including finding and evaluating puppies, the ten best breeds, and ten problem breeds), puppy development, bonding and socializing, housebreaking, basic commands, and puppy manners.

If you are a dog-lover reading Super Cool Pets, you most likely have experience bringing up a puppy. Due to a dog's optimal 10-15 or so year lifespan, a lot of time can go by between puppies. As we found, it's never a bad idea to update yourself on state-of-the-art training techniques, pet food and equipment. And we will keep you current here on Super Cool Pets.

The Easy Way: Petzlife Oral Care Spray for Clean, Healthy Pet Teeth and Gums

If you've heard it once, you have heard it a thousand times, you are supposed to brush your pet's teeth. Why? Once plaque and tartar have accumulated on your pet's teeth, it is recommended to have their teeth professionally cleaned at the vet. A vet has to render your pet unconscious in order to clean his or her teeth--not cheap and not a procedure to be taken lightly. So it is a good idea to make dental care a routine part of your pet's health maintenance schedule.
However, not all pets are real keen on anyone putting a toothbrush in their mouth, although that is the best way to begin dental care with a puppy or kitten. Petzlife Oral Care Spray works without a toothbrush to remove plaque and tartar on dogs and cats. It also safely kills bacteria on contact, helping to eliminate doggy or kitty bad breath.

For best results, withhold food and water 30 minutes before and after applications of Petzlife Oral Care Spray. A good time would be to brush your pet's teeth before bed, like any member of the household. One bottle will last at least 3 months if used as directed (and 6 months if used for maintenance).

QuickFinder® Clipper Takes the Worry Out of Pet Nail Clipping

If you are squeamish about clipping your pet's claws, or just want a safer way to do the job, here's a claw clipper you will love. QuickFinder® Clipper will eliminate your cutting worries. No more bleeding or pain for your pet. This is an electronic nail clipper in different sizes for dogs, cats, and small animals.

The Clipper utilizes QuickSensor Technology that clearly indicates when it is safe and when it is not safe to clip. You move the cutting blade of the Clipper towards the nail to allow it to sense the quick. The Clipper has three colored lights on the handle: red for "danger-don't clip", yellow for "caution--don't clip", and green for "safe to clip".

Effective on most claw density types, even black claws. QuickFinder® Clipper works on dogs up to 75 pounds. According to the product website, "more important than weight, is the hardness (density) of the nail. Any current guillotine style nail clipper does not effectively cut extremely hard (dense) or large nails. If your pet has extremely hard or very large nails, wait until our deluxe model comes out in early 2008." Visit the site for a video and more information.

If anyone smokes in your household, keeping the air clean should be healthy for your pets as well. According to this recent article in NaturalNews, Secondhand Smoke Poses Health Hazard to Pets, smoking is not just potentially hazardous to people but our pets too.

Living with a smoker places companion animals of many species at increase risk for a variety of cancers and other health problems, many of which are fatal, according to a press release issued by Oklahoma State University.

"There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets," said Dr. Carolynn MacAllister, a cooperative extension service veterinarian at Oklahoma State University. The press release cited a 1998 Colorado State University study, which demonstrated that a dog exposed to secondhand smoke at home is 1.6 times more likely to acquire lung cancer than a dog living in a smoke-free environment. Short-nosed dogs are particularly susceptible.

Austin Air Pet Machine Air Purifier - HEPA Air Filter has a baked-on sandstone powder coat finish. It is also available in White, Black or Silver.

Designed for rooms up to 1500 square feet, the Austin Air Cleaner will purify your space up to twice an hour. The Austin Junior Air Cleaner can clean a 700 square foot room up to twice an hour.
