PetScoop: FDA Says Bones are Unsafe for Your Dog

dogbone422.jpg

What could be more "natural" than giving your dog a bone? For a brief while we gave our Golden Retrievers large bones to gnaw on during that pesky and seemingly eternal chewing stage. A few bouts with middle-of-the-night tummy upsets quickly led us to abandon bones in favor of safer chewy toys.

Apparently the FDA agrees. In No Bones About It: Bones are Unsafe for Your Dog they list 10 reasons why it's a "bad idea to give your dog a bone". You probably will agree it isn't worth it.

Happy Earth Day 2010 -- Pets Gone Green and Eco-Friendly Poop Disposal

earthday.jpg

Happy Earth Day! Now is the time to reduce the environmental impact of our pets and improve their quality of life at the same time.

petsgonegreen.jpg For lots of great ideas, check out Pets Gone Green: Live a More Eco-Concious Life with Your Pets by Eve Adamson. This book will have you "recycling dog toys, cleaning up messes in safe, inexpensive ways, and learning how to be an advocate for a better world."

Pet poop can be hazardous to both human and pet health, transmitting germs and diseases. The more pets there are and the closer we all live to each other, the more at risk we are. Below are some easy solutions:

Dogs. The standard plastic bags many pet owners use to clean up poop are not earth friendly. Biodegradable poop bags such as BioBag Dog Waste Compostable Bags will break down easily and are environmentally friendly.

Another approach is to install a Doggie Dooley Septic-Tank-Style Pet-Waste Disposal System in your back yard. This works like a miniature doggie septic tank, using natural bacteria and enzyme cultures to turn dog waste into a ground-absorbed liquid.

Or try DIY. Dig a hole in your back yard and insert a garbage can or bucket with holes in the bottom. Then dispose of the pet poop into the bucket. Flush with water mixed with an enzyme cleaner such as Waste Terminator, which will help break down the pet waste.

Cats. Biodegradable litters are made from various plant sources, including pine wood pellets, or recycled newspaper, clumping sawdust, barley, and dried orange peel. Top-selling natural litters are Feline Pine Cat Litter and World's Best Cat Litter. Or give up litter all together with a Self-Washing Self-Flushing CatGenie.

Help Your Pet Lose Weight -- Pet Obesity Specialist Ernie Ward MD Q & A at the Washington Post

chowhounds.jpg

Last month we posted on author/veterinarian Dr. Ernest Ward's new book Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs Are Getting Fatter - A Vet's Plan to Save Their Lives. For those concerned about maintaining a healthy weight for their pet, the Washington Post has an informative Q&A with Dr. Ernie Ward who writes:

As many of you know, pet obesity is a growing problem in the U.S., now affecting 45 percent of all adult dogs and 58 percent of cats. That equals approximately 34 million dogs and 54 million cats that are overweight and at risk for diseases such as diabetes/insulin resistance, arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer and more.

In the end, we all get it that pet obesity is the result of too much food intake. Resources such as this book can teach us all to create new behavior patterns for ourselves and the pets we love.

Amazon Hot New Pet Book Release -- Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets

homeprepared.jpg

American consumers are paying top dollar for corn meal-based dry pet food. It's one thing for cheap brands, but another matter entirely that the packaging of many high-end foods list corn meal as the primary ingredient.

Feeding carnivores corn meal + additives can't be healthy. Whatever money is saved in the supermarket will ultimately be spent several times over at the vet's office.

Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets by Patricia Schenck is a second edition that has been completely rewritten to present the latest nutritional recommendations for your healthy dog and cat based on current research. It also contains an extensive discussion of medical disorders that can be managed in part through diet. You will love the simple recipes that can easily be prepared in your own kitchen at home. Sounds like a keeper!
