Hot New Amazon Pet Book Release -- The Puppy Primer

puppyprimer.jpg

Patricia McConnell is animal behaviorist and adjunct professor of zoology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. You may be familiar with her fascinating read The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs where she offers sound advice for dog owners based on this premise: "Pay attention to your own behavior. Believe me, your dog is."

Her newly released and updated The Puppy Primer is a must for new puppy owners. The book is a fun and simple guide through every aspect of raising a puppy with games, helpful hints and trouble-shooting tips for both new dog owners and training experts. In this easy-to-read updated version, the compassionate Dr. McConnell added new information about the benefits of positive reinforcement, as well as the importance of realistic expectations.

Pet High Chair

pethighchair.JPG

Lot of us have dogs who snuffle around disruptively underfoot during meals. Our cats jump up on the table. And both may want to sit in our laps. Rather than gating or crating your pet in another room, or constantly replacing the cat on the floor, promote more refined behavior.

This Pet High Chair lets your dog or cat join you right there at the dinner table, clipping securely to tables up to 2" thick. You can adjust the height without tools to bring your pet up close to eye level. There are two tethers on the chair to, well, keep your pet off the table and your lap.

Stamps to the Rescue 2010 -- USPS, Halo and Ellen DeGeneres Help Raise Awareness of Shelter Animals

halopetfood.jpg

Good for Ellen DeGeneres. The United States Postal Service is releasing new Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps. During the launch of the stamps, Halo: Purely for Pets, the pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres, will be donating a million meals to animal shelters around the country.

Their goal is to educate Americans about the plight of millions of homeless pets living in shelters. Almost half of them will be euthanized. These animals need good homes. The Stamps to the Rescue 2010 campaign encourages us all to adopt a pet, volunteer at a shelter, or just promote the cause by buying these stamps.

PetScoop: EPA To Tighten Standards on Flea and Tick Meds for Cats and Dogs

1-800-PetMeds Chalkboard/336x280.gif

Some of our dogs and cats have been suffering adverse reactions from pet spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control -- skin irritation, redness, gastrointestinal problems (vomiting or diarrhea), or effects to the nervous system, such as trembling, appearing depressed, seizures. The majority of the problems apparently involved overdosing small dogs in the 10 to 20 lb range and cats who took meds intended for dogs.

Beginning immediately, the EPA will increase scrutiny of these spot-on pesticide products to ensure their safety. The EPA will begin reviewing labels for clarity and will develop more stringent testing and evaluation requirements for both existing and new products. From the press release:
