PetScoop: Researchers Track Roaming Pet and Feral Cats

Eyenimal_Pet_Camera2.jpg

Ever wonder what exactly feral and free-roaming house cats really do when they're out and about in our cities, suburbs and rural areas? You may have heard of the amazing Eyenimal Digital Camera Videocam for Pets owners use to follow and record their pets' travels indoors and out (click here for post).

In the same vein, a recent two-year study used sophisticated tracking devices to monitor the travels of 42 owned and un-owned adult cats over a range of 6,286 acres at the southern edge of Champaign and Urbana, neighboring cities in Central Illinois.

The pet cats had significantly smaller territories and tended to stay close to home, their mean home range being 4.9 acres. Generally they spent just a startling 3 percent of their time engaged in highly active behavior, such as running or stalking prey, the researchers reported. The un-owned cats were highly active 14 percent of the time, largely because their survival depended upon hunting for their own food.

PetScoop -- Alaska's 2011 Annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

iditarod.jpg

The Iditarod is a sled dog race that starts from Anchorage, in south central Alaska ending in Nome on the western Bering Sea coast. Each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days. This race is currently in high gear. From the site:

You can't compare it to any other competitive event in the world! A race over 1150 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. She throws jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills, and you have the Iditarod.

While the trail through the wilderness is the same route travelled during the gold rushes a century ago, the 2011 Iditarod has gone high-tech. The mushers are equipped with custom-made sleds with adjustable runners for varying snow conditions and new this year, global-positioning-satellite (GPS) devices to monitor their progress. Live-streamed updates, cell phones and blogs keep the world informed about events along the 1,150-mile trail (1,850 km).

Hypnotic Jellyfish Aquarium

jellyfishaqua.jpg

Thinking of getting an aquarium, but not sure you are up for the maintenance? This Hypnotic Jellyfish Aquarium provides the desired "mesmerizing ambience" without the hard work of live fish. It has three artificial jellyfish that move in the water amidst the seaweed and coral reefs.

The aquarium sets up on your bookshelf or tabletop. A silent, integrated motor generates gentle currents, causing the jellyfish to rise and fall in the water, while LED back-lighting highlights their movements. You can choose specific light patterns from nine integrated LEDs that provide red, blue, and green highlights within the aquascape.
