Merrick Holistic Cat and Dog Food -- Amazing Customer Service

In an era of corporate ruthlessness towards consumers, some companies still care. Consumerist reports that Monica received a bad can of cat food from Merrick Pet Food
. She shares her positive story:
Just wanted to let you know of a good experience I had with Merrick Pet Food. I include this brand of cat food in the variety that I buy my cats. They have good products overall, good ingredients, quality, etc.
Well a few weeks ago I had the horrible experience of opening a rancid can. Definitely one of the worst smells I've ever encountered, and it sprayed on my hands when I opened it which left a great lingering stench. So I contacted the company and provided lot information of the can. They replied with the usual apologies and asked for my address so they could send a coupon. I was honestly expecting a coupon to get a free can of cat food.
Well, today I received a package from them with a bag of dry food and a coupon for a case of 24 cans of cat food, so about $45 worth of products. This was definitely above and beyond what I expected, they won me back. Good company and they'll keep getting my business.
Merrick Pet Care is family-owned and offers holistic cat and dog food and treats. See them on the web at http://www.merrickpetcare.com. Their products are available at Amazon

One Quart Heated Pet Water Bowl

Outdoor water bowl freezing up? This 1-quart Heated Pet Water Bowl
is thermostatically controlled to operate only when necessary. Comes with an heavy-duty "anti-chew" cord protector. Perfect for small animals.
It goes without saying that our pets should be not be outside for a prolonged time period in cold weather. That said, many of us like to keep a water bowl in the back yard or pen for the times the pets are outdoors, but it freezes up overnight. Some pets love to play in relatively cool weather and are fine as long as someone keeps an eye on them.

Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips -- We Learned the Hard Way

Here at Super Cool Pets we cooked our Thanksgiving turkey early, much to the delight of our beautiful and eternally ravenous Golden Retriever. Without boring you with the gory details, to our dismay she did accidentally get into the discarded turkey scraps.
Suffice it to say, it caught up with her in the middle of the night. Things could have been worse, and we doubt there are too many vets who would look kindly on going into surgery today or tomorrow.
Speaking of vets, Miami vet Dr Patty Khuly has a quick read to help you avoid this fate, Thou shalt not feed Thanksgiving leftovers or scraps, in six easy steps over at PetMD. ASPCA offers some helpful Thanksgiving Safety Tips as well.
Does it seem that everything happens when the vet's office is closed? If your pet does become sick at an inopportune time, Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM counsels on what to do in Holiday Emergencies When the Vet is Closed.
Happy Thanksgving!

National Pet Obesity Awareness Day -- How Many Calories are in Pet Food?

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention has declared today Wednesday, October 14 National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. Sensing a lecture? Not to worry -- we are not getting on our high horse here, since we all know first-hand how hard it is to look into those beautiful beseeching eyes and deny them a treat.
That said, according to the Association's research, an estimated 50% of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese and an estimated 14% of US dogs and cats are actually obese. Excess body weight, health problems, pet mortality and vet bills go hand-in-hand.
So if you are curious, at their site you can find your pet's ideal weight range, pet caloric needs, and the caloric content of many cat and dog foods, dry, canned and pouch.
