Pet food ingredient and nutrition labels are difficult to decipher. The integrity of the manufacturers is suspect. Generally, pet owners are left in the dark as to the actual nutritional content of the food we feed our pets.

The beta site Good Guide has stepped in with information and ratings on 1524 pet food products, broken down by individual brands, as well as categories dog dry food, cat dry food, dog wet food, cat wet food. Their methodology is based on:

  1. the nutritional adequacy of the food, as demonstrated by feeding trials or formulation testing
  2. caloric content disclosure
  3. life stage specificity
  4. an assessment of whether product ingredients are desirable in high quantities, desirable or less desirable

According to the GoodGuide criteria, the best pet food for dogs is Hill's Science Diet Healthy Mobility Adult Dog Food and for cats Innova Kitten Flex Chicken & Brown Rice Stew.

The worst are Kibbles 'n Bits Wholesome Medley Dry Dog Food and 9 Lives Chicken & Tuna Dinner Cat Food.
