Stamps to the Rescue 2010 -- USPS, Halo and Ellen DeGeneres Help Raise Awareness of Shelter Animals

halopetfood.jpg

Good for Ellen DeGeneres. The United States Postal Service is releasing new Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps. During the launch of the stamps, Halo: Purely for Pets, the pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres, will be donating a million meals to animal shelters around the country.

Their goal is to educate Americans about the plight of millions of homeless pets living in shelters. Almost half of them will be euthanized. These animals need good homes. The Stamps to the Rescue 2010 campaign encourages us all to adopt a pet, volunteer at a shelter, or just promote the cause by buying these stamps.

Amazon Hot New Pet Book Release -- Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs Are Getting Fatter - A Vet's Plan to Save Their Lives

chowhounds.jpg

Think your pooch looks a little round? Over half of our pets are too heavy. Most of us are apparently overfeeding our dogs by 25 percent every day. A new book Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs Are Getting Fatter - A Vet's Plan to Save Their Lives by Dr. Ernest Ward, DVM, founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, is filled with fascinating information and of course, weight-loss techniques and healthy tips. He tells us that many pet foods (like human ones) are chock full of addictive sugar and fat and are too high in carbs.

The slender author, affectionately known as "Dr. Ernie," is a practicing veterinarian who appears regularly on the Rachael Ray Show, and has been featured on Animal Planet, NBC Nightly News, the Today Show and CNN. He has authored and contributed to over fifty-five veterinary journal articles in North America, England, Canada, Japan, and China, and has published three books and three veterinary training videos. Sounds like an expert!

PetScoop -- Canned Food May Benefit Your Pet

canneddog.jpgcatcanned.jpg

Which is better--canned or dry pet food? Some pets may flourish better on a canned "wet" diet, according to Dr. Katy J. Nelson, an emergency veterinarian in Alexandria, Va. In Dog Daily she says that at least five types of dogs particularly benefit from canned or "wet" food:

1. Puppies -- Canned food is easy for them to digest and offers a concentrated source of protein.

2. Small breeds -- They too can have delicate digestive systems and high metabolism.

3. Dogs with food allergies -- Nelson often advises owners with food-allergic dogs to feed them a blend of wet and dry. This makes the food more palatable to the dog and minimizes problems from possible allergens.

4. Dogs with kidney and urinary tract conditions -- These dogs need good hydration, which they can get from the moisture of wet food.

5. Certain older dogs -- Senior dogs often suffer from health issues that are eased by wet foods. Dogs that have had teeth extracted, for example, might have difficulty chewing their kibble.

Save yourself the hassle. Get pet food shipped to your door.

9Lives Survey -- Most American Cat Owners Are Not Aware of Proper Feline Nutrition

9Lives.jpg

Pet owners try to have their furball's best interests at heart and think they are providing them with nutritious foods. But are some of us unintentionally subjecting our cats to potential harm?

A nationwide survey commissioned by 9Lives Cat Food of US cat parents found that:

  • 94 percent of American cat owners are confident they feed their pets the most nutritious meals possible. However, nearly half (48 percent) admit they've fed their cat table scraps - which do not provide the essential nutrients cats need - on average seven times per month

  • 75 percent believe that the more nutritious the cat food, the more expensive it is

  • 70 percent believe that giving cats milk to drink is a healthy practice, a surprising statistic considering most adult cats are lactose intolerant

  • 23 percent think a purely vegetarian diet is a wholesome choice, when in fact it can be harmful
