Pupsicles -- Peanut Butter Treats for Dogs

popsicle.jpg

Living in a sub-tropical climate, naturally it is usually pretty muggy in our neck of the woods. After the day heats up, and we have worked up a thirst barking at neighbors and hunting geckos, a cool-down treat is in order.

The answer--Pupsicles. Our dogs love peanut butter. They could happily live on it completely. Yes, peanut butter is fattening, but it also contains protein and oils, which are good for dog coats and skin.

Our hurdle is usually the container. Both our girls consider paper a delicacy, so muffin wrappers are downed along with the Pupsicle. We tried the small plastic containers sold in the plastic-ware section of the market, but it is so fun to crack the plastic in our jaws, it wasn't very cost effective.

Pupsicles are a bit like meat loaf, whatever works. But before you add a new ingredient, remember to check that is is not toxic to your dog. Here is a general idea.

Recipe
1.5 cups water
5 - 6 heaping teaspoons natural peanut butter
sugar -- tablespoon is plenty
a few glops of low-fat, plain( NO chocolate) yogurt (optional)
a banana (optional)

Method
Take a tiny bit of PB from the jar and put on spoons on floor to distract dogs away from drooling on your feet. Mix in blender. Pat dogs. Ignore. Consider putting more PB on spoons to distract. Pour Pupsicle liquid into plastic dixie cups, about half-way. Freeze. Serve one daily for snack. Your dog will be your BFF, if not already.

Window Hummingbird Feeder

We have a firespike bush outside our office window to attract hummingbirds, as I described in a prior post. For a hummer fan, there is nothing like seeing your favorite little birds up close. This Window Mount Hummingbird Feeder would do the trick as well.

feeder.jpg

The nectar is placed in a clear acrylic feeder bottle with an easy to clean wide-mouth design. It attaches easily to your window, or a wall or post, with quick release clips for easy filling. There are two feeding stations with perches. Bottle has 8 ounce capacity. Be sure to clean the feeder with soap and water prior to re-fill.

It is not necessary to purchase hummingbird nectar unless you so desire--you can make your own easily. Mix 1/4 c. sugar and 1 c. water in a cup or jar and add to the clean feeder as needed. It is unadvisable to dye the nectar red.

Fun experience for children and bird-lovers. Window Mount Hummingbird Feeder

Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker -- Cool Down Your Pets

We are all looking for ways to cool down our pups on these hot summer days, especially when they are outdoors.

kooldogz.jpg

Something we know our dogs will enjoy is the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker . It will keep the pups entertained and hydrated as well. Basically the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker is a big doggie popsicle: a frozen chunk of ice with treats of your choice frozen inside and anchored with a steel bar. You can freeze chicken broth with dog cookies inside, water with steak chunks, bananas--whatever your dogs love. Your imagination is the limit!
kooldogz2.jpg

Kit contains:
*heavy duty steel base and extension rod
*deep water reservoir to collect water as it melts
*reusable/freezable bucket with lid
*stainless steel cap bar
*ice treat recipes

The bucket will make an ice block about 5" tall and 7.5" in diameter. When placed on the platform, the top of the ice block can either be 7.5" (without the extension post) or 14" (with the extension) from the ground.

Acetominophen in Pet Food

hungrycat.gif

Super Cool Pets is not a pet health blog, nor an advice column, but we would be remiss not to bring your attention to the latest pet food crisis. We all are busy and if you missed this, please read Tylenol Toxicity via Pet Foods--Say It Ain't So! from one of our fascinating reads Dolittler, a blog written by a kindly Miami vet. Great spot, by the way, to learn "how vets think."

Now that acetominophen has shown up in pet foods (in whopping doses), you should know what this common household toxin can do to your pets. Most of you keep this drug around—it’s the ubiquitous Tylenol we trust so well to relieve our fevers and headaches with a minimum of side effects. But it’s not so safe for pets.

Cats are especially susceptible to the dangers of Tylenol. Because they lack the enzymes required to break it down, it has a way of binding to their hemoglobin (that near and dear protein that we all rely on to carry oxygen around our body), thereby limiting it’s ability to do its job properly. So cats die—quickly.
