Pet Ear Infections -- Easy Care Ear Kits

Ear infections are quite common in pets, as you probably know. They can be itchy or painful and may ultimately lead to deafness. Some of the signs are redness inside the ear, a black discharge and an odor. If your dog or cat is scratching the ear(s) a lot, won't let you touch them, holds the head to one side, and keeps shaking the head, a trip the the vet might be in order.

Help stave off ear problems with this Ear Care Kit for Dogs and Ear Care Kit for Cats in your pet medicine cabinet. They have antibacterial and antifungal ingredients. Clean out and rinse away infection-causing gunk with the Ear Cleanser, then apply the Ear Powder to keep your pet's ears dry. Use the Ear Miticide for pets with irritating ear mites.

Dogged Health -- Canine Health and Wellness

This morning we had an "eureka" moment over canine skin symptoms that have confounded us for over a year. We arrived at a pretty certain diagnosis over at Dogged Health, found via a newsletter from the American Kennel Club. We entered the bare minimum of information in their Diagnostic Dog - Symptom Selector and went from there. Nifty tool--check it out.

From the site: "DoggedHealth is the most comprehensive and authoritative canine health and wellness site on the Internet. We are both an information resource as well as community empowering users to make educated healthcare decisions for their dogs. Each and every piece of content is provided by a vet or, when appropriate, a certified trainer."

How to Pay Those Skyrocketing Pet Bills -- Pet Insurance Resources

We don't begrudge anyone the right to make a living, but vet bills sure mount up very quickly these days. Office fees, lab fees, x-rays, dental care, surgery, vaccinations--we are talking hundreds if not thousands per visit.

And, sad to say, the line between medical care and salesmanship is starting to look a little blurry. Do you know how or even if you would cover your pet's veterinary bills if they become seriously ill or need surgery?

Currently, around a million U.S. pets are insured, according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association. The Wall Street Journal recently ran an excellent overview of pet insurance, making the following points:

Consumers need to be careful, since many pet policies can be as confusing as coverage you buy for yourself.

Pet insurance often places strict limits on how much it will pay for particular procedures.

And policies can have tricky designs that can leave consumers with big out-of-pocket bills for their animals.

Premiums vary from around $10 a month to $75 a month, depending on factors including the richness of the plan, your location and your animal's breed and age.

For the Sake of Our Pets, Lose the Fireworks

Did you shoot off neighborhood fireworks last night to "celebrate" 2010? If so, this one's for you.

We believe in your right to be "you" as much as anybody -- vive la difference, life is a rich tapestry of colors, and variety is the spice of life. But...your right to be "you" also grants us the right to be "us". And we live with pets.

As pet owners we have to say: enough already, lose the fireworks, okay? After all, they are illegal, clearly dangerous and disturb the (midnight) peace. For those of us living in sub-tropical, drought-ridden tourist meccas, they present an unnecessary fire hazard as well.

Incessant loud booms, especially for hours on end, confuse and terrify pets, cause them emotional anguish, and worse, spook these sweet souls into running away and hurting themselves. Combustibles + parch-dry vegetation = fire engines screaming through the night.

That was our New Year's Eve 2009. How was yours?

PetScoop: WSJ Reviews Scents to De-Stress Your Pets -- Feliway and DAP

funny pictures of cats with captions

Does your pet suffer from anxiety, whether from thunderstorms, vet visits, travel, or separation issues? Many loving pet owners wonder if calming animal pheromone products are effective. The Wall Street Journal examines these Scents to De-Stress Your Pets:

Veterinarians say that pheromones do work--but not all the time. "They work on some animals, and not others," says veterinarian Bonnie Beaver, executive director of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in College Station, Texas. "They work in some situations but not in others."...

Overall, pheromone therapy appears to be less effective than drug therapies, such as antidepressants, typically used on pets with behavior problems, Dr. Landsberg says. But he recommends trying pheromones first, since they are easier to administer and have no side effects.

Exactly the conclusion we came to in our own trials, in both senses of the word. Read our review last summer, Thunderstorms, Fireworks, Vet Visits -- 3 Remedies to Reduce Anxiety and Calm Your Pet. We achieved most success administering Behavior Modification Drugsicon with basically no nasty side effects. Cheaper than DAP and Feliway too.

According to the WSJ article, the most-studied cat product is the Feliway brand -- Feliway Plug-In Diffuser and Feliway Spray. For your dog, the DAP -- D.A.P. Dog Appeasing Pheromone Spray or in a relatively enclosed area plug in a D.A.P. Dog Appeasing Pheromone Electric Diffuser.
