Fish Oil Supplements for Your Cats and Dogs Could Be Miracle Workers

Fish oil supplements are in heavy demand these days, as fish oils contain high levels of EPA and DHA Omega-3 essential fatty acids -- excellent for healthy skin and coat, eyes, joints, brain development and cardiovascular function.

nordicnaturals.jpg

What type of fish oil supplement is healthiest and most effective? Dr. Michael W. Fox, veterinarian (website) and author of over 40 books and the syndicated column, Animal Doctor was online 9/3/08 answering questions:

I get tired of plugging fish oil at every turn, but it IS a miracle supplement. Not oil from farmed salmon -- full of dioxins--and other fish oils as from tilapia do more harm than good because the Omega 3 and 6 ratios are way off. Nordic Naturals cod liver oil, up to a tablespoon a day, plus turmeric, up to 1 gram daily, in food or oral capsule, may help your poor cat.

Nordic Naturals cod liver oil for dogs and cats is an exceptional quality cod liver oil derived exclusively from wild Arctic Cod. The important Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, support healthy skin, coat, joints, heart and the development and maintenance of the brain and eyes. All natural vitamins A and D support healthy vision, immune function, and healthy bones. Nordic Naturals products are distilled for purity and exceed all international standards for purity and freshness (Norwegian Medicinal and European Pharmacopoeia1).

Nordic Naturals are available in liquid and capsule form at Amazon and Only Natural Pet Store.

Interestingly, Science News reports on a 4-year study where researches found that wolves, direct ancestors of dogs, would rather eat salmon.

Although most people imagine wolves chasing deer and other hoofed animals, new research suggests that, when they can, wolves actually prefer fishing to hunting. The study shows that when salmon is available, wolves will reduce deer hunting activity and instead focus on seafood...

The authors explain that the wolves' taste for fishy fare is likely based on safety, nutrition and energetics. Darimont said, "Selecting benign prey such as salmon makes sense from a safety point of view. While hunting deer, wolves commonly incur serious and often fatal injuries. In addition to safety benefits we determined that salmon also provides enhanced nutrition in terms of fat and energy".

Dr. Michael Fox recommends the cod liver oil over the salmon for your pets, but it is a decision each pet owner must make for themselves. If you are interested in trying them out, Wild Alaskan™ Salmon Oil Supplements are readily available for dogs and cats.

Petosan Silentpower Toothbrush for Pets

petosan.jpg

Professionals now recommend pet owners brush their pets' teeth to avoid dental problems. One you might want to try is Petosan Silentpower Toothbrush for Pets, a battery-powered double-headed sonic toothbrush designed for optimal grip. It is gentle and quiet to use, usually well-accepted by dogs. The brush cleans the inside and outside surfaces of the teeth at the same time.

It is recommended you use a specially formulated pet toothpaste such as Petosan (yummy--poultry flavored!). Human toothpaste is verboten since it can be harmful if swallowed. A few drops of cod liver oil in your pet's food every day will help reduce any gum inflammation.

Green Living with Our Pets -- Make Your Home Environmentally Pet Friendly

dogcatlawn.jpg

Sue McGuire offers some tips on making pet-lover homes environmentally-friendly in Green Living with Pets in Mind

Pets used to live outside. The farm dog hung out in the barn or slept under the front porch. Cats lived in the barn loft and did their job of keeping the vermin at bay. Fast forward a few generations. It's often recommended that cats be "indoor only" and hundreds of dollars can be spent on an orthopedic bed for the dog.

Just because we bring those former barnyard residents inside the house may not mean they are healthier for it. Scientists often cite our companion animals as "canaries in the coal mine." Household environmental toxins can be a major concern.

Here is a short list of household toxins to keep away from your pet:
  • Ibuprofen & Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Fabric softener sheets
  • Most cleaners and detergents
  • Xylitol, a sugar substitute
  • Grapes and Raisins
  • Insecticides and Flea Killers

Pet Treats: Is your dog making you sick?

pigsear.jpgNext time you toss your dog what seems like a yummy snack - say, a nice, chewy Pig's Ear, you might be setting yourself up for some tummy upset.

From The You Docs: Is your dog making you sick?:

Pet treats made from animal products may contain salmonella bacteria, which won't bother your furry pal but can give you a fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea 12 to 72 hours after the bug gets in your system. So how does it get there? Probably in your kitchen. An investigation a couple of years ago of pet owners who suddenly came down with nausea and vomiting found that they had fed their animals a treat and then prepared food for themselves.

So how to prevent your spending three or four days in the bathroom (or, in severe cases, the hospital) without depriving your dog of treats? It's pretty simple: Just wash your hands thoroughly after touching the snacks.
