Bach Rescue Remedy Relieves Pet Stress

Our sweet Golden Retriever Molly is phobic about thunderstorms. Now even rain can send her hiding in the closet or under our feet at the computer. She trembles, pants heavily and looks around wildly. Just the words for thunder and rain will send her slinking away. (We spell a lot around here.)

We are reluctant to drug our dogs, since they cannot give us verbal feedback on how they feel, and by the time it takes effect the storm is passed. But since we have moved out of the drought here in Florida, we cannot have her feeling this way on a daily basis.

Bach Rescue Remedy - Natural Stress Reliever (10 mL)

Yesterday, we tried Rescue Remedy, a homeopathic treatment which you probably have heard of. Well, it worked. It first seemed to be wishful thinking, but it was true. She stayed out on the sofa in the TV room with us, still drooling some and not a happy camper, but not relatively calm. We gave her 2 doses, about a 1/2 hour apart, of 4 drops each. She weighs about 90 lbs.

Rescue Remedy is absorbed by mucuous membranes, so it doesn't even need to be swallowed and is best administered between the gum and lining of the jaw. Since it contains a combination of five flower essences including impatiens, star of Bethlehem, cherry plum, rock rose, and clematis, overdosing is not a major concern, but prudence is recommended. If you know how this works, or would like to write about your own thunderstorm remedy, please leave a comment.

Other thunderstorm and stress remedies featured on Super Cool Pets are Stress Relieving Diffusers, Pet Stress Patch and Anxiety Wraps.

Best deal on Rescue Remedy is at Amazon, where the price is almost half of local retail. Also available at Entirely Pets as well as many retail stores.

UPDATE: Two days after this was originally written, Molly is sleeping at my feet snoring through a thunderstorm. She was given only one dose of the drops.

Pets Improve Our Health

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Alerts, pets improve our mental and physical health. "Dogs and cats, even a tankful of fish, calm frazzled nerves and ease anxiety and depression, according to research."

One reason is that pets alter our behavior. When they are near, we tend to calm down and speak more slowly and softly. All types of pets offer distractions from the worries of the day, because we naturally shift our attention to them when they are around. Pets also provide an opportunity to touch and stroke another living thing, which has been shown to be of value to our mental and physical health.

Ear Relief Wash Swabs

Our long-eared Retrievers have a chronic problem with itchy, mucky inflamed ears. It seems to get a little worse when they spend a lot of time in the pool or the ocean. Our vet diagnosed their problem years ago and has prescribed Animax Ointment, which treats the condition in cats as well.

Animax Ointment

But we need something to clean out their ears before we apply the ointment. Here's what we have been looking for--Ear Relief Wash Swabs to relieve itching and odor in the ears of our pets. Each package contains 24 liquid-filled 1.5 oz swabs.

Bird Cage Cleaners--Quick Clean & Poop Off Bird Wipes

When visiting pet stores, we are often dismayed by the filthy environment the birds live in. More often than not, their drinking water is murky and polluted--unnecessary since changing water bowls takes seconds. Keeping the birds' living area clean is essential to their good health. As the owner of birds, we know first-hand the continual mess they make. It takes a fair amount of work keeping their cages clean. That's life with birds!

Quick Clean dissolves fresh or dried on bird droppings, and deodorizes leaving a clean, orange aroma. It also softens fruit or seed droppings, nectar, bugs, and vegetable matter. It is purportedly safe on most color-fast fabrics and carpets, but manufacturer recommends testing a small area first for discoloration to be on the safe side.

If you use a spray to clean the cage and other areas of your home, smart to use a non-scratch cleaning pad. The finish on some bird cages is easily marred. It may be quicker and easier to whip out Poop-Off Bird Poop Anywhere Wipes (2-Pack). These wipes, 6" X 7.9", are pre-moistened with Poop-Off Bird Poop Remover, which are non-toxic and biodegradable.

Also available are spray bottles Poop-Off Bird Poop Remover (32 oz. 2-Pack)
and jug Poop-Off Bird Poop Remover (1 Gallon).

Happy 4th of July!

Enjoy the celebrations, but please leave your dogs and cats at home. The noise can be terrifying to animals. Never leave your pets outside and unattended, or alone to fret (and overheat) in the car. Best place is indoors, preferably with windows shut and A/C on if you have it with soothing music playing.

Good thoughts from North Shore Animal League America. This is aimed dogs, but caveats apply to cats as well.

The safest and kindest way to approach this stressful time for your canine friend, is to leave your dog safely stashed inside the house with a television or radio playing to drown out the noise. Crating your pet during this night is even better. With vigilance, plenty of distraction and a caring guardian, your dog will make it through this harrowing day. Here are some helpful hints to help your dog get through the day (and night) with as little stress as possible.

Pet Water Safety

With the vacation-party week of the 4th coming up, summer is now in full swing. Swimming is fabulous fun for many of our pets and a great way for them to cool off while getting some exercise.

Water can be hazardous for pets, just as it is for children. Since our pets only communicate through body language, we must stay tuned to their well-being even on those busy days when we have lots going on to distract us. A pet in distress, whether frightened, sick or over-heated, may only send out relatively subtle signals, since to display weakness in the animal world can make them vulnerable to predators.

There are tons of products on the market to protect your pet when around the pool, boat, ocean or lake. Here is a Super Cool Pets roundup of some recent posts featuring products to help keep your pet safe this summer season. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Large Digital Pet Scale

Many of us along with our pets have a daily battle keeping off those extra pounds. In our household, we reward good behavior with a (small) treat, which is good for the overall atmosphere but not so much for our girls' waistlines. Even if we dread the scale, with the Large Digital Pet Scale we can keep track of our pets' weight. This is similar to those used in veterinarian offices with an electronic LCD display and a heavy duty non-skid platform. Another great feature is that it is practically flat, so easier to weigh the reluctant pooch or the older, less-mobile dog. The durable stainless steel tray is easily removed for cleanup. Only 2" high so easily stowed away out of sight. Designed for pets up to 100 lbs.

Size: 2"H x 25"W x 14"D
Long life lithium batteries included.

Ships from and sold by Stacks and Stacks.
