Hurricane and Natural Disaster Pet Care

Excellent information over at our fellow Blogpire site Weather Snob on storm preparedness--check it out.

For a tool to create your own personal storm planner click here.

** Lessons Learned. Our area was a bulls-eye for Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne (September 2004, 3 weeks apart!) as well as Wilma in late October 2005. It was an eye-opener, especially since many of us had weathered quite a few New England hurricanes already.

It was the norm to be without power for at least a week to 10 days, some more. An important lesson Floridians learned--you are ON YOUR OWN--water, food, health, entertainment--as far as your local and state authorities go, during and at least for the first few days after the storm. They experienced the disaster too. Neighbors and strangers can be amazingly helpful in a crisis; however, plan to be completely self-reliant.

Florida residents have learned most of what we are posting here through personal experiences. Following are some strategies that we know now, that we really didn't know then.

Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker -- Cool Down Your Pets

We are all looking for ways to cool down our pups on these hot summer days, especially when they are outdoors.

kooldogz.jpg

Something we know our dogs will enjoy is the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker . It will keep the pups entertained and hydrated as well. Basically the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker is a big doggie popsicle: a frozen chunk of ice with treats of your choice frozen inside and anchored with a steel bar. You can freeze chicken broth with dog cookies inside, water with steak chunks, bananas--whatever your dogs love. Your imagination is the limit!
kooldogz2.jpg

Kit contains:
*heavy duty steel base and extension rod
*deep water reservoir to collect water as it melts
*reusable/freezable bucket with lid
*stainless steel cap bar
*ice treat recipes

The bucket will make an ice block about 5" tall and 7.5" in diameter. When placed on the platform, the top of the ice block can either be 7.5" (without the extension post) or 14" (with the extension) from the ground.

Above Ground Pool Eye Alarm

41mixdxx-GL._AA280_.jpg

Ensure your pet and children's safety at the pool! We posted here at Super Cool Pets about the Skamper Ramp Pet Pool Ramp. We told the tale of my brother's dog, who fell in their pool and couldn't climb out. Makes sense to consider a Pool Eye Alarm to notify pool owners of any pool intrusions. Cost: relatively low, peace of mind: priceless.

The poolside unit uses one 9V battery (not included). The indoor receiver plugs into an AC outlet, and uses a 9V battery in the event of a power outage. This underwater wave sensor mounts to the edge of your pool and detects disturbances caused by kids or animals as light as 15 pounds, while remaining immune to disturbances caused by wind and rain. Sensitivity is adjustable so you can minimize false alarms or maximize protection. When it detects a fall, it alerts you with a blaring 120dB siren at the pool's edge and a 100dB siren at an indoor receiver placed within 100 feet of the poolside unit. Because the poolside unit is battery operated there's absolutely no shock hazard. It even continues to provide protection during power outages!

Pool Eye Alarm monitors round pools up to 24 feet in diameter, or oval pools up to 16 feet x 32 feet. At Amazon and Smarthome..

Water Wiggler Water Agitator for birdbaths

If you don't have a birdbath in your yard and you love birds, consider getting one. Water attracts birds. Having a water source truly adds to the amount of birds at your feeder and on the ground and they are so enjoyable to watch. Educational for the children too.

For those who do have a birdbath, this Water Wiggler is an interesting accessory.

water%20wiggler.jpg

Apparently, not only do birds like water, but they like moving water. The down-side to a birdbath is that mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. This accessory can prevent that. You can use it year-round to stop mosquitoes and mold in summer and keep water from freezing in winter. Pair it with a birdbath heater in winter.

Needs two size D batteries which should go for about 2 months. Just place the Water Wiggler in your birdbath--no wiring, easy! Dimension: 5" H

Attracting Hummingbirds with a Hand-Blown Red Glass Feeder

Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red. We currently live in a sub-tropical climate where hummingbirds spend the winter. We have Firespikes (a bush with red stalk flowers) and Confederate Jasmine (heavenly smelling climbing vine with small white blooms) which they love. When we lived up north, we did not have any vegetation that appealed to them, but a hummingbird feeder did. This would be a fun and pretty feeder to have in the back yard this time of year.

hummer.jpg

The Hand-Blown Red Glass Feeder is both decorative and functional. It is made of hand-blown glass with a copper feeder tube extending to a unique decorative flower tip in red to attract hungry hummingbirds.

It is not necessary to purchase Hummingbird Nectar unless you so desire--you can make your own easily. Mix 1/4 c. sugar and 1 c. water in a cup or jar and add to the clean feeder as needed. It is unadviseable to dye the nectar red.

Measures 5 x 7.25 inches.
