Meet Bo Obama -- the Newest Member of the White House Family

bo1_blog.jpg

After months of anticipation, we are introduced to Bo, the six-month old male Portuguese Water Dog who will become part of the Obama household. Bo is a gift from Senator and Mrs. Kennedy to Sasha and Malia.

AKC provides more information on the Portuguese Water Dog on their site.

An athletic, active breed, the Portuguese Water Dog requires daily vigorous exercise. He is very intelligent and responds well to obedience training. His profuse coat is hypoallergenic, but requires regular maintenance. It may be kept in the lion clip (the coat on the hindquarters and muzzle are clipped to the skin) or the retriever clip (the entire coat is clipped to one inch in length and follows the outline of the dog).

Bo has not yet moved into the White House.

PetScoop -- Cancer-Fighting Drug Effective in Dogs

CancerDog_Oscar.jpg

Intriguing health development reported at WebMD:

Researchers with the Cleveland Clinic have successfully treated cancer in dogs without toxic side effects or discomfort. The feat could soon lead to a powerful new strategy for treating the disease in people.

Joseph A. Bauer, PhD, with the Center for Hematology & Oncology Molecular Therapeutics at the Cleveland Clinic, detailed the extraordinary achievement at the 237th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Salt Lake City.

Bauer's team's success story begins with a "miracle dog" named Oscar, a 10-year-old male Bichon Frise stricken with an extremely aggressive form of cancer called anal sac adenocarcinoma. Chemotherapy and radiation failed to treat the dog's disease, which left him unable to walk. Oscar had about 3 months left to live.

That's when Bauer and colleagues gave him an innovative cancer-killing drug called nitrosylcobalamin (NO-Cbl). Within two weeks, Oscar's cancer significantly improved and he was back on his feet.

And Oscar isn't the only dog on the road to recovery. Read report.

Touch Pets Dogs For iPhone -- Adopt, Nurture and Play with Your Virtual Puppies

Another reason to love your iPhone. A socially-networked virtual pet game is in development exclusively for iPhone and iPod Touch. Publisher ngmoco and virtual pet genre pioneer Andrew Stern of Stumptown Game Machine have announced the spring 2009 release of Touch Pets Dogs for the iPhone.

In Touch Pets Dogs, players adopt, nurture and play with their virtual puppies through one-on-one touch screen interaction or on play dates with other players' dogs from around the world. The ambitious Touch Pets social network, embedded within the game, allows owners and dogs alike to build relationships with other players and their Touch Pets. Puppies' social lives continue to evolve whether their owners are logged into the game or not, and the results are broadcast for the world to see on the Touch Pets social network dog feed.

Players can also personalize their 3-D pups with new clothing, accessories, toys, grooming tools and other doggie gear. With five different dog breeds to choose from, Touch Pets can be trained to fetch, catch and do tricks using a variety of toys, touch commands and accelerometer inputs. Puppies can grow in five exciting careers: Crime-fighting, Science, Rescue, Fashion and Political tracks. The right training can prepare a Touch Pet for dozens of career missions where it can earn special reward items and mission postcards that further define its unique identity -- on and off the dog feed.
In addition to the predictable touch interaction with an adorable cartoon puppy, the game features advanced AI simulation and social networking features that make it a more interesting proposition.
