Loss of a Pet -- Helpful Guidelines for Grieving Owners and Other Pets

GoldenPaw.jpg

Members of our family here at Super Cool Pets have recently faced the hands-down toughest decision confronting any of us who live with pets. The death of a pet can hurt as much as the death of a relative.

As well we know, nothing but time and acceptance can dull the pain. This insightful article Love, Guilt & Putting Dogs Down |The Other End of the Leash by gifted animal trainer and behaviorist Patricia McConnell, Ph.D may help in the meantime. She deals with the ubiquitous guilt factor among other issues.

And for those who live with more than one pet, "siblings" can respond in numerous different ways to the loss. These pets may be grieving, and we don't always know how best to comfort them without words. Dr. McConnell provides a few tips here in Helping a Dog Through a Loss |The Other End of the Leash.

Amish Handsewn Tote Bag -- Carryall For Pet Stuff

AmishHandsewnToteBag.jpg

We can't seem to go anywhere these days without carting along all the stuff we might need. And that's especially true when out and about with our pets. We can fill this rugged cotton-canvas Amish Handsewn Tote Bag with toys, treats, and food for a picnic, or pack it with towels and tennis balls for a trip to the beach.

Fully lined, it features swivel handles, a zipped top, and a small interior pocket for our keys, phone or cash. Handsewn by Amish craftswomen in rural Ohio, the tote's design was inspired by a vintage bag of dog food.

Potty Paws Pet Waste Pick-Up Bags from Hugs Pet

pottypaws.JPG

Leaving dog waste in public parks is a health hazard and just plain unsanitary. Here at SCP headquarters we try to use left-over supermarket plastic grocery bags, but they get gross and are sometimes so heavily re-cycled that they rip in your hands.

These paw print designed Potty Paws bags make for easy and convenient pet waste pickup. Simply place the bag over your hand to pick up waste, then turn the bag inside out and zip-seal it shut. Use in your backyard or on walks in the park. Cute!

Coconut Oil -- Miracle Oil for Dogs

Nutiva.jpg

Unrefined coconut oil helps to support and maintain overall health in both humans and dogs, according to Coconut Oil: Miracle in a Jar for Dogs | Petside Why? Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a fatty acid that is also found in mother's milk that prevents infants from getting viral, bacterial and protozoan infections,

Apparently, your dog can reap those same benefits as well. When applied topically coconut oil can:

  • Disinfect cuts
  • Improve skin and coat condition
  • Speed wound healing
  • Deodorize
  • Clear up rashes

We humans can also use Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil as a cooking oil, a good butter substitute or as a body oil. No refrigeration required.

Poison Ivy or Oak Touched Your Pet's Coat? How to Clean It Off and Remain Rash-Free

poison_ivy.jpg

Our dogs and cats are generally not allergic to poison ivy, sumac or oak like their human guardians, but they sure can transmit the toxic plant oil sticking to their fur to any humans who pat and hug them afterwards.

The offending urushiol oil on these plants is very hardy and persistent. Even if someone doesn't get anywhere near the plants, contact with the oil on any other surface can still cause the miserable blisters and rashes on human skin.

If you have ANY reason to suspect your pet's coat has touched poison ivy, sumac or oak, unless you want to scratch and suffer for a week or two, don't mess around. Tips from Getting Rid Of Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac on Pets| About.com Veterinary Medicine:

Getting Rid of Urushiol Oils on Your Pets
A bath is in order. Here are some tips to make the pet bathing as effective as possible for removing this stubborn plant oil.
  • Wear rubber gloves.
  • Use a barrier cream, such as a lotion containing bentoquatum, on your arms and skin not protected by gloves. Ref: CDC prevention tips
  • Use copious amounts of cool water, for a long period of time.
  • Use a "degreasing" soap, such as Dawn dishwashing detergent, to remove the oils from your pet's coat.
