Pet Travel Water Dispensers -- Don't Leave Home Without Them

Pets Travel Water Dispenser.jpg

Hot summer weather is upon us. Today while out and about, we met a beautiful young Golden Retriever who, but for an expensive trip to the emergency vet, almost died of heat stroke over the weekend. Bob had collapsed at the beach after 10 minutes.

Turns out Bob the Golden does not eat or drink when home alone--dogs can be so sensitive. That day, he was then whisked off for a romp on the beach apparently without refreshments.

His near-miss is a welcome reminder to be more tuned in to our pets, their body language and their needs, especially in hot humid summer conditions. A pet who seems happy on the surface may upon closer inspection actually be a bit frenzied.

The solution is to remember to bring along water for pets on outings, no matter how close by. There are travel water dispensers to carry your own water supply and dog travel bowls if you do have a source of water at your destination. A gadget such as this Handi-Drink Dog Water Bottle could make the difference between life and death at worst, not to mention the 3 or 4 figure vet bill.

Road Trips with Your Pet -- Do You Use Vehicle Restraints?

puppiespickup.jpg

Does your dog hang out the window when you drive? Ride in the back of your truck? Or even curl up in your lap? Our Goldens clearly think we drive way too slowly and often consider climbing up front and taking over the wheel.

According to the Doggie Distractions Fact Sheet | AAA/Kurgo survey, nearly six in ten (56%) of those responding have driven with their dog in a vehicle at least once a month over the past year. Three in ten respondents (29%) admit to being distracted by their dog while driving. Many of us don't use pet restraints.

This graphic shows the reasons:

Airlines Snubbing Snub-Nosed Pets

dogflying.jpg

Do you know what a brachycephalic breed is? If you live with a Pit Bull Terrier, Pug, Shih Tzu, Bulldog or Boxer, among others, chances are you do. Brachycephalic literally means "short-face" or "short-head" and refers to dog breeds with facial features that include a compressed upper jaw and a short muzzle.

As reported recently in Banned by Many Airlines, These Bulldogs Fly Private - NYTimes.com, snub-nosed dogs are showing up on some airlines' do-not-fly lists, along with Persian and Himalayan cats, due to innate respiratory difficulties which can be magnified by air travel.

According to the federal Agriculture Department, 189 animals died on commercial flights from June 2005 to June 2011; of those animals, 98 -- more than half -- were brachycephalic breeds.

If conditions are such that you must fly your pet, you do have options. Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Sun Country apparently still allow brachycephalic breeds to fly in cargo. Pet Airways and Pet Jets offer chartered service.
