Do Your Dog's Claws Need a Trim?

Golden_claw_clipping.jpg

Many of us back off from trimming our dog's claws. According to Trimming Dog Nails and Dewclaws | WebMD, most dogs wear down their claws naturally through activity. If not, they can become excessively long, damaging carpets and upholstery, as well as interfering with traction and ability to walk.

Basically there are two types of claw (nail) clippers for dogs -- one has two cutting edges and the other guillotine type has only one. Either type works fine, just groomer preference. Avoid using nail clippers designed for humans because dog's claws are not flat.

Hot New Pet Book Release -- The Genius of Dogs by Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods

thegeniusofdogs.jpg

Ready to change the way you look at your pet? Today on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, it's fitting that we focus on intelligence, even if it is of the canine variety.

This entertaining new book, The Genius of Dogs: How Dogs Are Smarter than You Think by evolutionary anthropologist Brian Hare and his wife, research scientist Vanessa Woods, argues that when dogs became domesticated thousands of years ago, they became far more like human infants than their wolf ancestors, developing a whole new kind of social intelligence.

Pet Toy Safety -- Cats and Strings May Be a Dangerous Combination

Catstring.jpg

Cats seem to be fascinated with anything long and thin, and many of us give them string and twine to play with. But according to Cats and Linear Foreign Bodies - String, Thread, Ribbon, and the Like | Pet MD | Dr. Lorie Huston an unsupervised cat can actually swallow these "linear foreign bodies" which are particularly hazardous.

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is certainly true when it comes to cats and linear foreign bodies.

If you use toys containing string, yarn, twine or fishing wire (such as cat wands) to entertain your cat, supervise your cat during play and lock the toys securely away when you are unavailable to supervise.

Be sure to keep sewing boxes, craft kits and other items that contain string, twine, yarn, fishing wire, rubber bands, and similar objects locked away from your cat also.

If you do find your cat with string hanging from your pet's mouth or anus, the vet cautions to not pull on the string or otherwise attempt to remove it, as it may be attached somewhere along the intestinal tract.

To be on the safe side, best to keep an eye on your cat when he/she is playing with toys.

PetScoop: Benefits of Fish Oil and Essential Fatty Acid DHA for Puppies and Kittens

fishoil.jpg

To ease the pain of osteoarthritis, veterinarians often recommend incorporating fish oil into the diets of older cats and dogs. New research suggests that puppies and kittens may benefit from DHA-rich fish oil, according to Fish Oil and Puppies | PetMD | Dr. Ken Tudor.

The researchers concluded that...fish oil may aid in the neurological development of puppies....DHA supplementation in kittens may not have the same beneficial visual or neurological development effects. Until there is more research in this area, my personal and professional opinion is that fish oil supplementation in kittens is safe so all risk is to the positive upside.

As in all things medical, check with your vet prior to adding any supplements or meds to your pet's diet. At Fish Oil for Pets
